Low carb flu

I was fine until today.

Last night, I woke up at 11:15, and didn't get back to sleep until nearly 5:00 a.m.

I woke up at 9:00 this morning with a wretched headache and body aches. Part of those are from this crazy-ass weather change we got last night. But the muscle aches and general feeling of gross are likely due to my body's sudden panic at having to burn, you know, fat for a change. Also, this week I doubled the number of times I walk up the hill every day. My calves, glutes, and quads are feeling it by now.

So glad I picked up so No-Salt at the grocery store yesterday. Potassium hit, here I come.

Because I am psychic or something, yesterday I went ahead and submitted everything at work that had a deadline of today. So I called in sick. There's no need for me to go in. I told the office to call me if an emergency comes up. I'm going to spend the rest of the morning sitting on the couch and repeating the mantra: I have done this before I have done this before I have done this before and I was fine.

And then I might take a nap.

It took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on. I understand why people freak out the first time they cut grains out of their diet (especially people going Low Carb For Real, which I'm not, really). It's painful and doesn't seem healthy at all from where I'm sitting slouching. The only thing keeping me from downing some oatmeal is the memory of feeling so much better once my body flips that switch.

So maybe not the Low Carb Flu so much as the High Carb DTs.

Nggggg. I want Dr. Adams to crack my neck. But I can't spend the $40 for the chiro visit. *grrr*

Good luck making it through the transition period. It's always so...unpleasant.

A-yup.

Loves baby doll. We'll get through this, and be better for it in the end.

Yes, indeed! Solidarity!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus.. even though your allergies have been reined in... the tree pollen is atrocious right now!

It will be better, it will be better!

I have a hard time making it past that "OMG must have Grilled Cheese SAMMICH"

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, how did I forget about the allergens? Jesus H., no wonder I feel like so much ass.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)

But of course, your ass feels GREAT!

So maybe not the Low Carb Flu so much as the High Carb DTs.

Yup. You already know it works and that you'll be so much better for it so soon so all I'll say is: ::hugs::

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. And oh great the emotional shit just kicked in and I got all teary reading your ::hugs::

*bangs head gently*

You can do it!!!

I will totally admit that the downshift can be really unpleasant,
but it seemed like a evil echo of my metabolic machinery redo-reboot-shift when I was first taking up IF.

Change is always scary to the ego,
and you and I and all my close friends have strong, healthy egos.

*HUGS*

Aww. This is perfect and just what I needed.

My experience with LoCHO is this:
The first two days are a pig-biting-bitch
A am cranky as junkyard of rusty mangles
But...
Without fail, I get one gram of protein per pound of lean body mass,
about 240, and the rest of my calories come from olive, fish or coconut oil.
The breakdown looks like this:
Pro: 240+g = 960 kCal
Fat: ~100g = 1000 kCal
CHO: ~50g = 100 kCal
total 2100 kCal
This is a baseline, which means that I get some calories from nuts(almonds) and cheese, I eat these when I feel like I NEED to eat something, that's why the CHO score is approximate.
I also cheat on the weekends... usually with toast. mmmm toast.
I find if I intake this much protein, that my recovery from some seriously heavy weightlifting, becomes not-that-big-a-deal, and DOMS is pretty much a thing of the past. I used to deadlift once every two weeks at 400#, now I do 600 once a week and some heavy squatting too.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I should probably up my protein. I haven't done the math to figure out how many grams I should be getting. Thanks for the reminder on that.

Also, I need to buy some coconut oil. They didn't have any at my neighborhood grocery so this weekend sometime I gotta drive out to the Community Mercantile.

I am not feeling terribly motivated to do either today, however. Even though the first one just requires opening up the damn Windows calculator.

sounds to me like your not getting enough calories.

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It was pretty hard at first to eat that much fat and protein, but in about 3 days I got used to it. Now if I don't get it I feel mildly hyper-vigilant or something, its hard to describe...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably right on the not enough calories. I ate pretty light on Wednesday and Thursday was mostly egg protein.

See, if I had that coconut oil, I could just go eat a spoonfull right now. Maybe I should put on my big girl panties and drag myself to the Merc today after all.

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Coconut oil is pretty good by the spoonful! Don't do that with olive oil tho! I tried a shot of olive oil once.... Graghhhalacha is the only word I could find to describe it.
Olive oil in a protein shake is good.
Also natural peanut butter, or any of the nut butters, is good for a little calorie bump.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo. I should go down some almond butter. I didn't make it to the store. I put on my shoes, got my purse, stepped outside and said "Nope. Not today."

=b

[identity profile] bestill.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, I never thought of putting olive oil in a protein shake. Hmm . . .

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to a picnic at Centennial Park this evening. Do you want me to pick some up for you? If so, any particular brand?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the offer! I am running all my errands tomorrow morning, and will get it then. I need to get more milk and spices, so I really have to go myself.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-04-16 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, to the coconut oil. That is part of why I keep it around - to shove it in by the spoonful (it's not OMG SO FABULOUS! but it's good, if you don't mind, you know, oily texure). I eat it [almost] daily in smoothies/shakes.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Picking some up tomorrow fer sure. Do you prefer any particular brand?

[identity profile] shrijani.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I had horrible insomnia last night, and a protracted finale floor show of a coughing fit that kept me up most of the night. I try not to look at the time when this happens so I don't have any sort of mental concept of how tired I should be, not that helps much, because I don't think it does. BLEH.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I had horrible insomnia last night

Great minds think lay awake alike.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man... last night I had a fucking FIERCE headache and my whole neck and back felt like they were on fire from the pressure change.

And I had to walk up that GDMF hill at least once a day for longer than I care to remember; living at 14th & Tenn pretty much mandated it. Bleh.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. Fourteenth street is a killer. I have it pretty easy. I just have to walk up Indiana.

[identity profile] bestill.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you are feeling so shittay. I hope you are feeling better by now. I had no idea that you get sick form going off carbs. Obviously, I have never done it . . .
