Support your local farmer

Another reason to buy local/buy small. See [livejournal.com profile] funky_peacenik's post here about Monsanto suing small farmers. Stay classy, Monsanto.

I'm ...tired? Tired seems to mild of a word...of laws and courtrooms governing what we can and cannot eat. I was listening to NPR this morning but had to turn it off when they aired this story about McD's being sued for selling toys in Happy Meals. You know what? Fuck you, Center for Science in the Public Interest. Don't you think you'd better serve The Public Interest by investing that money in some nutritional education programs instead of lawyers? But it's easier to take people to a courtroom than a classroom.

I've to get better about making it to the Farmer's Market on Saturdays. I'm only getting there about once a month. Most of the time, I'm buying vegetables at Checker's. Which is great as far as keeping my money local, but I'd rather give my money directly to the people growing the stuff. The market is only open for half the year (less?) and I can't go for two months of that because of my participation with KCRF. So seriously. Time to put my money where my mouth is. Or rather, time to put my time where my mouth is. Geez, I wish the market opened even an hour later.

Followup on the body fat scale issue: There's a department on campus that does caliper skin-fold body fat tests for KU-affiliated persons. Instead of buying a scale (that has hit and miss reviews), I'm going to go in to get a skin-fold test done once a month through December. I like the double-benefit here. One: Less Crap In My House, and Two: Humiliation Should I Fail To Lose Fat. Nothing motivates like shame!

I did an abbreviated version of [livejournal.com profile] miischelle's Bellydance Conditioning class yesterday morning and today I am sore in all the right places. Feels good! I need to remember: This Feels Good. Keep Doing It.

Apropos of nothing, but it made me smile:

I don't know why "This Feels Good. Keep Doing It." is such a hard lesson to learn sometimes.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And when it feels good but is actually bad for me, it's so much easier to keep doing. What the hell is up with that?

Vuvuzela Horns

[identity profile] wyckedgood.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you heard about these at the World Cup? The vuvuzela has been the subject of controversy. Its high sound pressure levels at close range can lead to permanent hearing loss for unprotected ears after extensive exposure,[5][6] with a sound pressure of 120 dB(A) (the threshold of pain) at one meter from the bell.

LOVE the cartoon and yes to the farmers market!

Humiliation works for you? It does nothing good for me and a whole lot of not-good on top of that.

Different strokes for different folks!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard people talking about them...I'm trying to figure out how to connect them to the post. Help!

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I need to get on the farmers market thing SO BAD! And it's seriouls 4 blocks from my house...and organic local!
Bah.

I have a Body/Mind/Spirit outlook (inlook?) on my person. My mind wants to do stuff and my body moans about it. My body wants to do stuff and my mind moans about it. Getting all three to cooperate is HARD....but it helps me categorize which part of me is resistant and why. My body wants to sit on the couch and eat ding dongs. My mind wants my body to look and feel good, and also wants to not be bored. I find I do best when I treat my body like a misbehaving 5 year old.

I hate Monsanto too....

Forgive my tangential thinking...

The cartoon ...air horn...lol.

Ha! Unfortunately, my body and mind are uniformly lazy these days. Although I suspect this is an endocrine issue. Because I used to be much much more active when I was in my mid-to-late twenties. The T3 stuff is helping. I hope I get to stay on it.

*crosses fingers*

Ah!!! =D

I've heard several times that calipers are great for relative accuracy, but not for absolute accuracy. If possible, you should probably get the same person to test you each time and just keep track of the changes.

But oh, isn't it fun to say VUVUZELA?

Re: :)

[identity profile] wyckedgood.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Totally

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked a comment on the McDonalds toy issue on KMBC, can't find it, but paraphrased:

They (McDonalds) are just doing their job, and we as parents, need to do ours.

Score one for personal responsibility!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! I'll have a standing appointment with Mallory, a grad student working in the department.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tiny score, but I'll take what I can get! And I'm always thankful for parents like [livejournal.com profile] stuology and [livejournal.com profile] _mac_.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)

Word.

[identity profile] funky-peacenik.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I would totally venture to Lawrence to go to their farmers market. Seriously. I would. I heard it is big and beautiful and great and full of awesome stuff.

Let me know if you want company.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say "come on down!" but really, most of the people shopping there drive me up the fucking wall. See my Yelp review of it here (http://www.yelp.com/biz/downtown-lawrence-farmers-market-lawrence#hrid:9g1HNIss5lfTJC1x3ByXrA). I try to get in and out as fast as possible and I don't spend time browsing around, enjoying the ambiance.

You'd probably have a much better experience if you went alone, or with a more like-minded individual.

[identity profile] funky-peacenik.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy Crap- it closes at 11 am.

Do you have a local co-op in your world like squashblossomcoop.org?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The Community Mercantile used to be something like this, but now it's a full grocery store with regular retail hours.

[identity profile] funky-peacenik.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You know.. You will be in my hood on the 11th. I can send you the BadSeed update for that week and if you wanted anything I could pick it up for you that night. Then you can get it from me the next day.

[identity profile] the-themiscyran.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Which department?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Somewhere in Robinson.

Re: Vuvuzela Horns

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2010-06-23 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I always, ALWAYS parse the word 'vuvuzela' in my head as Vulvazuela. Like, Venezuela, but with a vulva.

herpderp

Re: Vuvuzela Horns

[identity profile] wyckedgood.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, so glad I am not the only one.

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I need to purchase an air horn.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the offer. I think I'll be fine with my foraging at the Lawrence Market. Although it will be difficult to resist the call of those damn doughnuts near your place.
