The light at the end of this particular tunnel

I can see it, and it doesn't sound like a train.

Only one major snafu at the conference today, and I think I covered it fine. Of course there are always the minor annoyances, but you can't let those bother you or you'll wind up in a corner, biting your knees.

A couple people were very kind with their compliments about the level of organization for this conference. That was nice. Someone else pulled out the Claudia Black comparison, which I hadn't heard in a long time. That was nice, too, on a very different level.

I teared up a bit getting James Morrow's autographs. He was very patient signing my six books. I think there was one person who had more than I did, but he had multiple copies of things, which I always think is a little sleazy. Mr. Morrow took the time to write something specific about each book. For Towing Jehovah: "To Lydia, who would never leave God unburied" which I find delightfully vague and open to at least two wildly divergent interpretations. I told him that Only Begotten Daughter had a major impact on me when I read it in my early 20s. Perhaps I actually used the words "changed my life." *cough* Which it did, but in ways I didn't realize until much later. In it, he wrote: "For Lydia, who understands. Best Wishes, James Morrow (who was happy to change your life)"

I put in nearly eight hours today, which is...fine. I wish I'd thought to get approval for the time from our department chair. I don't know if it'll work to claim the time retroactively. Even if she did approve it. It's not like I'd get paid for it, but the comp time would be nice.

I got home at 4:30, ate lunch, lay down on the couch, and woke up at 6:10. My brain still feels sluggish, but my body is nice and rested. Yay? An annoying combination. I wish I had a working car right now, so I could run some errands. I suppose I should do laundry instead.

Oh, that's pretty wonderful re: James Morrow taking the time to make his inscriptions extra special. I remember back, before the internet was much of a thing, getting an email response from one of the pivotal authors of my adolescence, Charles de Lint. He was lovely, and took time to really reply to what I had written him. I get where it would feel sleazy, I truly do, but how delightful when someone responds as Mr. Morrow did with you. <3

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, he was very gracious about it. Yay for Mr. de Lint being a lovely person, too.

And as an example of how the internet has made interactions with authors smaller and weirder, check this out. [livejournal.com profile] tessagratton's blog post about Robin McKinley's book Beauty changing her life here (http://tessagratton.livejournal.com/552327.html), a follow-up post about Ms. McKinley here (http://tessagratton.livejournal.com/563891.html), and then Ms. McKinley's blog post here (http://robinmckinleysblog.com/2010/07/16/an-unscheduled-night-off/).

Tell me that's not awesome--and a terrifying reminder of how small is our world. Would you not freak the fuck out if that was you?

I have in my archives a cherished email convo with Mr. DLint, in which he complimented me on balancing a sword on my head. Oh, the glory!

*dawns on me* You know, you do look like Claudia Black! I'll be damned. Whoa.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
The resemblance was a lot stronger when I had long hair. Now that it's growing out again, I think it's becoming noticeable again. Especially in the ponytails (http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/claudia-black-s10.jpg).

Good conference, Back in the dark ages I used to be the one to ship books to Jim's students ahead of their arrival. I am glad that your stress will back off for a bit.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Oh my goodness, shipping books! Thank you for the reminder to pick up the Sturgeon books at Templin tomorrow. GOD. Not that I would have forgotten tomorrow. =D

Aww, I love the inscriptions from James Morrow. The one about not leaving God unburied is fantastic and the inscription on Only Begotten Daughter made me tear a little bit, too, just reading the story. :-)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
They're both fantastic things to have in the fronts of my books. Maybe someday you'll make it back for a Campbell Conference again!

I certainly hope to! Perhaps one summer after I've conquered the dissertation. :-)

James Morrow, huh? Funny, that; I've been on a kick and have been reading a few of his books. I read Shambling Towards Hiroshima (didn't love), Philosopher's Apprentice (liked rather a lot), and am currently reading The Last Witchfinder (so far rather good).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Wow, talk about timing. I haven't read Shambling yet. I very much liked Philosopher's Apprentice, though. I think it's my second favorite of his.

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Err I think the person is wrong on saying you look like Claudia Black. its not true. Claudia Black has the luck to look like you. Same difference i guess, but i just like the way it sounds better. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha ha! Jimmy, you are so awesome. BTW, I returned successful from the hunt, so you have the requested items for RoomCon 2011.

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God! Thank you so much! I can't tell you how much it is appreciated. (you really don't know it, but you are saving me around a $1,000) And these items will take and help make a part of room con just a little bit more special.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Always happy to give you and RoomCon a boost.

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Now get Chris to tell me what casino he likes in Las Vegas, and that will get another part cleared.... :) oh yes Room Con will be huge...

which brings me to another thing. I would like to have you as a guest at Room Con 8 (2012, I am already planning for the future). i will let you know what guest, as i am still working on a little some thing for that year. And it all depends on what that person says, to figure out the theme....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris has never been to Vegas. I KNOW.

o_O

It's a shame, really, because I love Vegas so much. Love love love it. Used to go regularly for an international rockabilly convention, but haven't been in over five years now. Tragic.

I'd be honored to be a guest in 2012! Sweet thing. Please tell me there's a THEME OF DESTRUCTION in the works...

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
neither has some of the other guest, and they have a favorite casino. You tell him to pick one for me (i actually can't pick it for him)

Me i need to go to vegas. Have certain things i need to do (go to the liberace museum). If and when i do go, i will basicly call it my Fear and Loathing vegas trip.

Actually one thought is a detruction theme of sorts. thats all i can say for now. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll give him a choice between my favorite three. =) Sound good?

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm sure you and him would have a close idea on casino choices, so that works.

Jesi Lipp is New York New York
Bland Lemon Denton is the Flamingo
Robin Bailey is the Luxor
David Lee Anderson Space Quest Casino (inside the hilton casino) he didn't know a casino, but said if there was one with space/sci-fi as a theme, that would be his. Between the stardust, orbit inn and the space quest casino... well space quest won.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin Bailey is the Luxor

Color me unsurprised.

Heartbreakingly, the Aladdin Casino is no more. I didn't even get to say goodbye! =( With its demise, my fave three are The Bellagio, The Venetian, and The Luxor. With Luxor already taken, I'll have to think of a third to suggest to him. Hmmm.

Edited 2010-07-18 17:23 (UTC)

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If the luxor is your third choice for him then its ok. It will not matter which one it is. Even if he goes after one the others have chosen. I just found the different ones to be facinating to see the ones that are choosen. I figured you would like the Bellagio and the Venetian. Also remember, you can give him the choice of ones that are no more as well.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'll toss in the Rat Pack-era Sands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sands_Hotel), too. =D

[identity profile] jimmy-hollaman.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh the rat pack. now there was a group of guys...
