More Net Neutrality stuff

CREDO has another call-to-arms (well, call-to-phones) about Net Neutrality. When I called the FCC office, the staffperson took my message and then directed me to this website where you can type in your own message! Pretty cool. Just scroll down to the Filing Public Comments button on the left hand side. Once you're on the docket list, click on Proceeding Number 09-191 to leave your thoughts.

Oh, and for those naysayers who continue to believe that Google can't be evil? Yeah. Whatev. [livejournal.com profile] rorschachsix has some great links analyzing their position. Check out his post about it.

In the interest of getting well rounded information and not just ranting off any stray blogger's -- often strawman-filled -- posts about it (which happened with a recent supreme court decision as I recall), I would direct you to the EFF's review of the situation (http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/08/google-verizon-netneutrality). If you are going to link to stuff, might as well link to pretty much the authority on issues like these.

ETA: clicking through link finally above, I see they also include a link to the EFF. good deal.

I believe "evil" is relative, and Google was stupid as crap to have thought of it as an unofficial motto, because now everyone's first go-to response is to think "Oh wait, they're being evil" when really, they're being a corporation. Corporations of sufficient size will always do at least one horribly stupid and potentially evil thing.

They have funded bunches of alternative energy and green initiatives. They're sponsoring a prize for commercial moon exploration. They bid the minimum in the FCC spectrum auction to insure some open standards for carriers (you could argue this protected their own phone interests, but since they give away Android OS, it doesn't matter to them if you can take your Hero from one carrier to another, and they'd always have available apps. ) They've given away premium software and services to education institutions and sponsored scholarships for women and people with disabilities in math and science programs. They fund health insurance for same sex partners of employees and offset the tax penalty. They serve their employees local, seasonal, organic food. Etc, etc, etc.

And they've compromised (somewhat stupidly) with Verizon over a proposal that the FCC is free to reject. They think they're the shit for doing it, but I'll tell you I got two personal pitches for alternative stories from Google PR this week. Coincidence? Doubt it. Evil, nope. They're just being a corporation, and that's what corporations do.

I saw "Filing Public Comments" as "Fling Public Comments" and thought, "Huh! That sounds a lot better than 'hurl accusations'."
