Domesticity

One of the English profs sent me a heads-up about this Twitter account yesterday. My favorite is this one.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick bought me a foam roller for coaxing out the knots in my glutes and I.T. bands. Jesus Christ the pain. The glorious pain. Why did I not shell out for one of these before now? We also bought some tennis balls, which are too intense for my poor glutes right now, but did wondrous things for [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's back.

I stocked up on hard squash ($.55/lb at Checker's) and will be making butternut puree and mashed acorn squash for freezing in my new stackable freezer-safe containers. No more gallon zip-lock bags for chicken stock*, etc. Yay! I was dubious of the effectiveness of freezing spaghetti squash, so that will be purchased and prepared on an as-needed basis.

Laying in food for the winter is a delightful activity. Prepping masses of food for future meals is psychologically rewarding--both at the time of creation and when I pull it out to thaw. I am very much an ant rather than a grasshopper, but at least I'm not as much of an asshole about it. I like to share food.

On [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's post yesterday, someone asked "where do I find someone to cook for me?" In case anyone reading here has the same question, let me direct you to what I suggested [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick tell her. Craig's List, bulletin boards at local food co-ops, community blogs, etc., all would be great places to advertise for a cooking/eating buddy.

* I have over two gallons of 24-hour simmered chicken stock for freezing, too. MmmmMMM!

Foam rollers are kind of . . . hm. Hard to describe. They're intensely painful at times, but can really help the recovery process if you can grunt it out!

Yes! God, it sounded like I was being tortured. Which I was. Just voluntarily.

I love foam rollers so very much. It's the only way I've ever found to really "iron out" those trigger points that blossom along the outsides of my thighs.

I love the foam roller. I don't do it as often as I used to, back when... If you foam roll before yoga you will notice a pretty dramatic difference. I know I did. It would often mean the difference between a full split and some sort of gibbous , split-like creature, that grunted and flailed in desperation.

Ooooh. Good idea! Thanks! I'll try that before my next yoga class. Maybe I'll do it before dance class tonight!

Ditto the love for foam rollers. When I pulled muscles in my quads a few weeks ago, they helped get me back up to speed much quicker than I would have expected.

I am more than a little annoyed at myself for not ponying up to purchase one of these babies a long time ago. Happy to hear you got good results from it!

Wish I'd have known.. I had one given me by a physical therapist and I hated it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of containers do you get?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just the cheapy ziploc ones.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheapy Ziplocs are made of .. good stuff! Yay!

Found on website...( Saran Wrap is also made by SC Johnson)

Ziploc Containers are 100% chlorine, dioxin, and BPA*-free, making them completely safe, especially for microwaving. No matter how high the temperature, they will never form dangerous dioxins. These containers meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety regulations concerning materials that come into contact with food during microwaving.

*BPA (bisphenol A) - Estrogen-like chemical that has been shown to encourage the growth of a specific category of prostate cancer cells. Commonly used in the manufacture of some plastic products.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I paid the extra buck for the BPA-free label, rather than purchasing the Target brand. Who really knows if it makes a difference, but it makes me feel better.

And I won't be using these for anything other than storage. No microwaving.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)

I'm with you on that... I just don't trust plastics for the micro, plus they get damned hot!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything that has the capability to bubble while you're cooking with it is not something I want to use for cooking.

Fer realz
I had a hard time trusting that new silicone stuff at first.

It is almost time for me to stock up on squash puree as well.

I grabbed the ad for Checker's that came out today, and it is advertised at $0.44/lb until Oct. 12th for anybody reading the comments and needs to stock up as well.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, man! I paid too much at fifty-five cents! =b
