Update: Due to inclement weather all classes and most events are cancelled for Feb. 2 at KU-Lawrence and the Edwards Campus. Campus will be closed from midnight to 11:59 p.m. Feb. 2; only weather essential/emergency employees report to work.

Whoa.

KU canceling two days in a row. I'm not complaining about the free days off, but Jesus H., it can stop snowing already.

It is drifting in our front yard such that only the very top step of the porch doesn't just blend in with the yard.

I can't even see how much it has drifted in front of the garage because I haven't been willing to go outside.

Lawrence public schools have not cancelled. I'm sure they will, but they will wait until about 11:00pm and have their robo-dialer call my cell 8 times.

I've never heard of an instance where KU closed and Lawrence public schools didn't.

This is only the third time I can remember (since 1988) that KU has closed two days in a row. The other times were the ice storm in 2002 that took out the whole town's power for three days (that was a great birthday present, let me tell you) and the other was the 2006 microburst that made it unsafe to walk on campus until they could clear up the debris.

Do you remember any others?

They closed in the late 1970's the week of Valentine's day.

Wow!

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
They closed in the early 90s for two days due to snow/ice. It was when I started KU and was living in the dorms because myself and a friend who lived in the dorms with me got a wake up call both days at 6:30am from another friend of ours at K-State who did have to get up and go to class. It was a big deal then because people claimed they had not closed KU for two days since the 70s. (Don't know if that is true or not). I don't remember them doing it for two days in a row since then as a student.

I bet that was during my brief KC or Topeka employments. I think I remember driving home in one of those storms. Good times!

Okay, I'm wrong. It was only one day. Perhaps our friend just called us to be a general a-hole.

And it wasn't closed for a week in the 70s. At least not since 1972. Just two days.

You know they put that up because *tons* of people have the same conversation everytime KU closes.

Jan. 27, 1997 is the day I got stuck on campus because the buses stopped running and I did not have a car.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Believe it or not, I remember that day in 1997. It was shameful that they kept campus open for longer than they kept the buses running.

What. The. Fuck.

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I remember it too. I lived at the bottom of the 14th St hill and pretty much ended up sitting on my ass and sliding down.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah ha ha ha ha! That's fantastic! I'm sure it sucked at the time, but what a memory that'd be.

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have an 800 number to call to see if my building is closed tomorrow. Since I-70 is closed I can't imagine why they would open, but you never know. I don't budge until I get my drive shoveled -- which I can't do. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I am so glad we don't have a driveway!

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Let alone my driveway. Although, getting out of my driveway is easy.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
getting out of my driveway is easy

No kidding. Just sit down on a big platter and have someone give you a push.

I hear that shit.

Say, you and Chris are better car people than me. If I overrevved my engine trying to get out of a snowdrift, and then smelled pickles, did I burn off some antifreeze? I am guessing I should check my antifreeze level...?

I am too much of a girl when it comes to cars. Nail polish is one thing, but I need to man up beyond being able to check oil, refill windshield washer fluid, and check/air tires, and rock the manual trans. LAME.

Probably, but it's no big deal. If you mean you over-revved it FOR A LONG TIME, then you should have it checked out. But just make sure it's not lost a lot of coolant and you're good. Wait for it to cool down before opening the overflow tank, though. Then refill up to the "FULL COLD" level with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. If it's not down much, there's no rush.

If you can't see any coolant in that container, don't start it until it's refilled, then look for burst hoses and such.

Thank you, Chris! I knew I could count on solid advice from you guys. ♥

I am surrounded by nerds! Any moment now, we shall be breaking out the AD&D stuff.

Oh, man, that actually sounds like a really awesome time.

Haha, I'm actually tickled to find that out, too!

Don't feel bad, you're doing better than Jbird's son, who is 22 and not only was chicken to drive my Solstice, but hasn't figured out when he should change the oil in his own car.
