Halloween tragedy

I experienced a tragedy last night.

Around 7:30pm, the doorbell rang, and it was a huge group of trick-or-treaters. In great costumes, to boot (Zombie Harry Potter and Hermione! A jawa! A classic top-hatted magician!) After five (ish?) years of living in this house, we've given up on kids in costumes, so of course I had no candy. I felt awful. Really really awful. I asked them to come back today and I promised to have candy for them. Oh, I hope they come back! And next year: Candy. Just in case. Worst case scenario, I buy a bag that doesn't get distributed and I put it in the office candy jar.

Never again will I suffer the heartbreak of turning away children on Halloween. I'm not lying when I say I almost cried I was so upset.

But now, here's something from [livejournal.com profile] graydown to lighten the mood. In her words, Warning: Contains Proclaimers.

That is so, so tragic! Ugh. I would have felt awful, too. I hope they come back for you.

(Also, I have NO appropriate icon for this comment. Just zombies.)

If I hadn't been in my pajamas already, I would have told them to come back in fifteen minutes and run to the store right then and there.

Were your porch lights on? That's supposed to be the signal for "NO CANDY HERE"

The porch lights are on auto, so when someone walks up to the door... =(

I disabled it after the kids left. Come back tonight, kids!!!!

This is a very sad thing. I want to hug last night Lydia.

Thank you for understanding.

I know just how you feel. I thought I had stocked up - our new neighborhood is all about the holidays, and I still had to send the teenager out to buy more about half-way through the evening. CANNOT DISAPPOINT SMALL CUTE CHILDREN IN COSTUME! Ack!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
For real. Especially when they really were some pretty damn solid costumes. The jawa's eyes actually glowed.

Ooooh, glowing! - I always want to give double the candy to the ones with really good home-made outfits. For you know, creative encouragement.

Also - that video is faboo. :)

I think it was the first year we'd moved up to Olathe, I was used to living in a loft apartment up some unmarked stairs, and so not having trick-or-treaters ever come ever, and so I didn't even think about candy or anything and I was home alone (I don't remember where everyone else was that year, I think Grace might have been taking a class or something) watching 1408 (that I remember, apparently) and the doorbell rang and it was trick-or-treaters and I had no treats. I was mortified.

I think I found something in the house that was individually wrapped and gave it to them, but ever since, if I'm home on Halloween night, I've made sure to have something, even if we have wildly uneven trick-or-treating attendance. Last night we had quite a few, and mostly young kids in fairly cute/neat costumes, so that was nice.

Which, y'know, "I feel your pain," is sort of what I meant to say by telling this story, but apparently I got sidetracked in there someplace...

HA! No, I got it. Understood!

I certainly learned my lesson this year. Better safe than remorseful!

Yeah, as a 20 year old I got down to the granola bars.

Normally we get lots of trick or treaters, but we decided to go on a hospital visit instead.

We're well-stocked now! A variety of Halloweeney chocolate, gummy monsters, and batty mint-chocos.

Thank you! Here's hoping the kids return. If not, Robin's candy jar in the FSE office is going to get a big old donation tomorrow.

Oh Lordy! If you have no candy TURN THE LIGHTS OUT!!!

I had candy & no kids, because it is way spooky to get to my house. So I put it in the office jar.

I totally sympathize. Next year: CANDY ON HAND.
