IDGAF

Do I love or hate this new Vogue pattern? It's the dress equivalent of a mullet, but I can't deny the appeal of the bustle reference. I'd have to see it in person. And I suspect it wouldn't look all that great on curvy, short-legged women. So best to just leave it alone, yes? Might have to purchase this one, although I'm uncertain if it's really as gorgeous as I think it is, or if it only seems so because of the absolute dearth of decent designs from any of the major pattern companies this season. I don't know why I continue to look and shop for new patterns, anyway. I could make one garment a week without ever re-using a pattern in my current collection, and I doubt I'd run out of patterns before the end of the decade.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick left the heavy bag up for me yesterday afternoon, so when I got home from work, I could do some punching all on my own if I wanted. And I did! So I did! I only lasted about fifteen minutes, though. And that was broken up into thirty seconds (or so) of punching with long breaks between to catch my breath. By the end of the fifteen minutes, my hands were shaking and my teeth hurt from my heart pounding. Good times. I like punching things. A lot. I'm even starting to incorporate a kiai in my back-fist punch. Hardcore, bitches!

So, yesterday's Obscure Culture Reference Reveal. Regarding the use of the "like a boss" phrase + my reference to Nazi fashion? Hugo Boss provided uniforms to the Nazis. There you go.

I was considering attending a kirtan on Saturday night, but I think I'll stay home and get plastered instead. I'm pretty sure I know what that says about my level of spiritual enlightenment, and I'm pretty sure I don't give a fuck.

Is that red dress supposed to fit the model that way?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get me started on the horrific fitting jobs on pattern envelope garments. I hardly ever look at them anymore. The line drawing is much more helpful.

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
WHEW.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Gads, I know what you mean about patterns right now!

I'm iffy on that first one, but I like the bodice/sleeves. Maybe in a very slightly less structured fabric?
I love's me a peplum jacket, one of the few 40s/80s styles I'd love to come back.

Oh and I have a membership to the pattern review site now, so if there's anything you want looked up? :)

Oh, cool! I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

I think I would like that dress better without the slit int he front and with a scoop neck instead...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! That deep V, with the shape mirrored in the front slit at the hem, is what I like best about it. Of course, where the hell would I wear it? The office holiday party is probably not an option...

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking dress #1 would be great on Em (who's lj name I can't spell) and I <3 the second dress a lot.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! This would look good on [livejournal.com profile] radiantmephit. And seeing as she and I are pretty much opposite body types, that nixes it for me. Ah, well.

[identity profile] radiantmephit.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
! I did not see this comment! Insanity! Well, maybe that is why I like the pattern. I'm seriously thankful that you both think I could rock that dress. Good to know.

I still think you could wear dress #1. You look great in a deep V (boobage!), You have a nicely defined waist. Your shape is flattered by A-line skirts, which this pattern has. I just don't know what that bustle would do on either of us. Is it a giant red arrow (of sorts) pointing to the boo-tay?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that bustle. Good in theory, but I'm uncertain about the application.

I would totally rock the front view, yes.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I would never have gotten that reference, so thanks for explaining to us unenlightened masses on your page. :)

Ok, here comes my little opinion on the dresses. I LOVE the red dress. but the model doesn't fit in it. They need someone like Joan from Madmen, who has a decent set, who can fill that puppy out. Hmmmm...maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is just too much fabric in the armzone. not sure.

On the first dress. Total trailer trash.
But the right person could pull it off...maybe that's you?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can think of only one person who might have gotten the Boss reference, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't read my LJ, so.... *sadface*

See my comment to [livejournal.com profile] tessagratton about pattern envelope dress samples. They're worthless. You cannot rely on them to accurately portray the garment. Line drawings or GTFO.

Attitude-wise, I could rock the front view of that first dress. Figure-wise, the back view would kill me. If I cared to put the effort into it, I'd just alter the back so it was a plain old sheath dress--perhaps with a kick pleat. But I have so many patterns that don't need design alteration. And, alas, I have no place to wear something that low cut. =(

Sorry I wasn't around to appreciate your obscure reference earlier. I have often thought it a damn shame that the monsters got the best fashion designers in WWII. 'specially the SS - they really ruined that awesome black leather, red & white power look for later generations.

For your enjoyment:
That Mitchell & Webb look "Are We the Baddies?"

FOR. REAL.

Although in Certain Circles, you can still get away with it.

Oh man, I love the little I've seen of Mitchell & Webb. I hadn't seen this one yet. Thank you!!!

[identity profile] the-themiscyran.livejournal.com 2011-12-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. Always happy to share the Mitchell & Webb love. :)

[identity profile] saffronhare.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda like the bottom half of that first dress pattern. Looks SAUCY. It might look awful on me, but I'd be tempted to seriously swish my hips just to have it move. Then again, I'm sort of fashion-deficient. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I also think it looks very 80s which, no matter how many fashion faux pas were committed by that decade, still holds a special place in my heart.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Punching things. I want to do this.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you know where we live.

[identity profile] e4q.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i like it. i like that colour, too.

i'd want it with pockets and i'd want to be able to wear a round necked long sleeve t shirt underneath it, so that i could wear it loads without washing it.

please and thank you.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Wearing it as a jumper is a fine idea.

Hm. What do you call a dress-type garment made to be worn over a blouse? I think in your neck of the woods, jumper = what we call a sweater. Yes?
Edited 2011-12-02 14:23 (UTC)

[identity profile] e4q.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, pullovers are sweaters are jumpers. but no, that dress is not one...

i am sure there is a word for a dress that is designed to be worn over things, but buggered if i can think what it is. i like that dress an awful lot more than any of the ones you can get for the uniform project. http://www.theuniformproject.com/ although, the inclusion of pockets is a must for an everyday garment.

[identity profile] e4q.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
so, i think if you made it to be worn over stuff it would technically be a pinafore. but the big difference between what that would mean for arm holes pre-lycra and what it could mean now is key to the idea of using this pattern as one. obvs the dress would have to be not so tight fitting that you couldn't get a top on underneath, comfortably, but with a nice dose of lycra, i say all things are possible.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
but with a nice dose of lycra, i say all things are possible.

Ha! Or, you know, I could just use one of my several patterns that are actually designed to be used as a jumper. Pinafore.

Funny, the word pinafore isn't used hardly at all here, and if it is, would be a sort of frilly apron-like garment (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~looper/pinafore.htm), usually worn by little girls now, with an Easter dress or something, unless they're members of a modestly-dressing religious group.

How is it that we use such different words for articles of clothing? Language is SO WEIRD.

[identity profile] e4q.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
it would never be a jumper here, a jumper is always a pullover.

i just see myself in it, but not wanting to flash cleavage, and wanting to wear it several days in a row, and wanting my long sleeves on underneath.

but i do like it, especially the swishy back.

[identity profile] radiantmephit.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
LOVE the Vogue pattern.

IMHO, this is a mullet dress: http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2010/09/02/0902jessica-alba-venice-film-fest_fa.jpg

Oh Jessica, Jessica, what are you doing?

I think it's a good thing you like that Vogue pattern. As I mentioned above, I think you'd look smashing in it.
