Getting an early start, yo

I woke up at 4:49 this morning! Happy Long Weekend! Really, though, I don't mind. I love being awake and alone early in the morning. Also, it gave me time to wrap [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's last present. Since classes are over, he's home pretty much any time I'm home, and that's just really weird for one, and for two, it means I don't have a lot of alone time, which brings me back to that part about not being upset for waking up even earlier than I do on workdays.

Does anyone here read slashfic except me? I mean, people who are reading this LJ. Obviously there are huge communities for it out there, but I'm just curious if anyone who reads and comments here likes slash.

Endless.com is having a 50% off boot sale and I'm trying to decide if I have the willpower to just window shop. I mean...I'm saving up for the boots of magic awesomeness. I shouldn't be looking at buying anything but groceries right now, you know? But shoe shopping is sort of like browsing porn for me. Except you can legally purchase the goods for sale at the shoe store.

What I should do is go work on something in the craft room. I gotta get it cleaned up because it's wrecked like whoa, but I want to work on at least a couple more projects and I might as well do that while shit is spread out all over the place already.

So anyway. Sort of a pointless hello post to anyone else who's up at this hour. You. Poor. Bastards.

Good morning! Not up as early as you--I rolled out at 7 to make pumpkin pie, la bete, and baked french toast before going to Mom's for Christmas. Then everyone comes to our house tonight for extended family Christmas. Tomorrow is Santa and the kids followed by NOTHINGNESS!

Merry Christmas. I hope your long weekend is exactly what you want it to be.

Thank you! And to you, too!!!

I read a ton of slash. My two big fandoms that I read are Harry Potter and Doctor Who, and in both of them I read slash. Occasionally I read some threesome groupings, but they always have at least two men. I don't mind het, but I don't read purely romance driven plots with het. I'm fine with het if the story is really about something else, and the romance is fairly incidental.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. Good to know! Sounds like we've got fairly similar tastes except for our fandoms of choice. I dabble in HP a bit, but there's so much underage stuff and the power dynamics there kind of freak me out. Teacher/student affairs have been a squick for me ever since...well, that's a story that could probably be its own entry so I'll just say it's a longtime squick.

That said, you've read Resonant's Transfigurations (http://trickster.org/res/transfig.html), yes? HFS that's some good story, there. I stayed up until 1:30 in the morning reading it the first time I read it (yes, I've re-read it--maybe more than once) and you know I am not a night person. So.

I...have no icons that have anything to do with general fic or fandom. Hm.

[identity profile] athenaartemis.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand some of the power dynamics in HP fix, either, and I hate teacher-student. Nearly everything I read takes place after Hogwarts, in many cases several years after.

[identity profile] athenaartemis.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
We'll have to have a more in depth conversation about this in person at some point, because I have all sorts of opinions on fic, and why I read why I do, and I lov talking to other people about what they like.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly the kind(s) of conversation(s) I'd like to have, too, so yay!

And if you like post-Hogwarts stuff, Transfigurations is perfect. It is at Hogwarts but it's post-war. I loved it.

oh alone time! I missed it so much when I was married. I didn't know how much until I lived alone. Did you see Saturn?

Nope on the slash, though I understand why folks like it. I used to have some kirk & spock icons that were funny enough. To me, though, it can be funny but I don't find it HAWT!

I'm not cleaning my room.
I just moved in there so I wouldn't have to clean the main room. So I refuse to clean in there for at least 6 months. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see Saturn, no...I wasn't willing to venture outside. =/ I was too comfortably warm. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick woke up surprisingly early, though, and got a glimpse.

I SLEPT IN, can't the next couple of days so glad I got to today. Having some unexpected alone time as PDA decided he should go get his Mom one more thing, and of course we forgot something at the grocery store last night. I should be cleaning, but coffee and LJ seems much more fun.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Leisurely coffee and LJ, alone in the house, is such a treat! Crazy, innit? But so nice.

I was not awake, but I am now!

I have gotten nothing of any consequence done this weekend. I am trying to forgive myself for that.

I'm going to make necklaces for my little cousins tomorrow, using the shells that I picked up on Juno Beach when I was there visiting K-Pat. After that, I think I will take a nap. :)

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Psst... I've only recently pursued any slashfic, as far as actively seeking it out, so count me in as: Yes, just new to it.
I don't really need to have known characters in my porn, so seeking it is different, and I'm still sorting out which ones are in my interest range.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me know when you find a niche and I'll be happy to share recs with you. In addition to the meta-conversations I want to have (mentioned above), I want to be able to just sorta, you know, squee over how good certain stories are. Poor [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick just doesn't share the enthusiasm. He puts up with it when I just have to read a particular bit to him, but it's not his thing.

I'm pretty late to the slashfic game, too. I think I started reading it in, oh, 2008 or something like that?

I like fanfic porn because (you know silly me), I like to have a connection to the characters in my porn. So it's either good-or-at-least-competently-written erotic novels which are about as rare as hen's teeth, or fanfic (common if not commonly excellent), where I already have an emotional investment in the players.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. I'm sorry to say, my fallback has been the Poppy Z. Brite's Shudder At Your Touch series (repeatedly, serious, I must know all those characters now), and anything I pick up from Susie Bright's feed (http://susiebrightfeed.livejournal.com/).

[identity profile] royal-spice.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I read slash/fanfic porn...whenever you post links to it. ;)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Maybe there are other lurking readers out there and I should just put up an occasional rec post. =)

[identity profile] royal-spice.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a great idea to me!

I enjoyed Transfigurations...I don't enjoy a lot of the HP fanfic that people have suggested to me for many of the reasons cited above (underage squick, and power dynamics = not my kink). Transfigurations makes clear that it's 5 years later, they're adults, and agree with your HFS above. :)

I also liked the Jayne/Simon slash you posted a while ago, and I've read other Firefly stuff.

I also used to read Xena/Ares slash. *ahem*

Anywhoo....yes, post your links! I'll try and be present to discuss rather than lurk. I just don't read a *lot* of this genre to have sweeping opinions or recs.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel you need to comment just to comment. It's good enough to know at least one person out there is going to appreciate my posting some of the stuff I've read and liked. I don't wanna bother putting stuff out there if nobody gives a shit, you know? So bonus if you wanna talk about it, but not required.

I'm glad you liked Transfigurations. I mean god damn that was well-written. Did you read her "DVD Commentary" notes, afterward? Amazing how much work she put into that. Just...wow.

I just went back to read the notes...yes, absolutely amazing. And a fantastic piece of fanfic, with or without the hot Harry/Draco business.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
With the kind of ending that Rowling didn't have the gumption to write.
