Boom

WTF, 5:00 a.m. thunderstorms?

They woke me only ten minutes before I usually wake up on my own, so it wasn't so bad. And I gotta 7:30 chiropractor appointment this morning, so the extra time was nice. I'm getting treated by Mikell Adams for what she diagnosed as trochanteric bursitis. My favorite part of the wiki article?

More often the lateral hip pain is caused by disease of the gluteal tendons which secondarily inflames the bursa. This is most common in middle-aged women..."

This is middle-aged, people.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick bought me this gorgeous thing for my birthday:
drum

I took it to Hippie Drum Circle last night. Everyone agreed it was gorgeous. Everyone also agreed that it needs a new head. So, back to Supersonic Music this weekend!

I had a bursitis flare-up in my knee a few months ago. It freaked me right the hell out. It made my lower leg feel like it was powering down.

Ends up it, along with my recurring back/hip issue when doing deadlifts, was caused by a few minor muscular imbalances. I did a bunch of diagnostic physio and massage therapy, and with my fantastic physical therapist, we found a way to fix the whole shebang. So now I regularly do single-leg training exercises on top of my usual exercise regimen: pistol squats, one leg Romanian deadlifts, slow-motion lunges in all directions, and one leg bridges, with the supporting leg on an exercise ball.

May the bursitis never return.

I hope hope hope a solution for yours can be found, too.

It made my lower leg feel like it was powering down.

Whoa! Yes, that's it exactly! Did your PT have any specific stretches or exercises to recommend? I know mine's my hip instead of my knee, but perhaps I could incorporate similar movements...

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I basically do full range of motion stretches throughout the entire leg, and focus on making them equal from one leg to the other. Because I am a lot more flexible than the average person, this sometimes requires help, so partner stretches are good.

I have an overly tight IT band and peroneus tendon in my left leg, so foam rolling the outside length of my leg helps a lot. As for the peroneus, when it gets too tight, I have to get massage therapy. It's not really an area I can work on myself.

Thank you for the reminder on the IT band and foam roller. I have got to get back into the habit of doing that.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's easy to get out of practice of doing it because it just plain sucks. Haha!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Man, I hate that thing. =D

That is officially a fucking gorgeous djembe. I have one as well, but it's not as pretty!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm super pleased with it. And will be more pleased with a new head that doesn't sound so flat/dead.

Mine's a doumbek, not a djembe. A djembe is African and has the rope-lattice around the top for tuning/tightening. A doumbek is Middle-Eastern and the head is either screwed in or otherwise affixed without the intricate weaving around the top*.

Most of the people in my group play djembes. Only two of us own Egyptian doumbeks. The djembes have a deeper voice and make better sound for big outdoor performances (which is mostly what we do). But damn I couldn't not get this baby.

*edit: Re-reading this portion of the comment, I realize I sound like a preachy asshole. Sorry. That was not how I intended to come off. =(

Ah, okay, I am not that drum-savvy, so good to know. Heh. I haven't played mine in a while.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You can school me on cars and I can school you on Middle-Eastern instruments. =D

Will it also involve booze in copious, delicious amounts?

Gawd, I haven't been to a drum circle in years. I haven't been on the pagan scene in so long.

TBH, very little in my life (outside of my job) does not involve booze in copious, delicious amounts.

Awesome.

Remind me I need to get you some of Joe's oil (Joe of Lee & Joe at Royal Eggs). It kept me from at least two cort. shots on the good hip before I could finall get the surgery on the other one. Good Stuff.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting! I'm going to be running all over KC tomorrow. Perhaps I could swing by?

[identity profile] grnvixen.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in Gardner all day. Himself may be there, or I could leave it on the porch. I'll make a note to myself.....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Leaving it on the porch would be super since I have no clue right now when I'd be over to get it. Much appreciated!

[identity profile] tama-grey.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an absolutely stunning doumbek! (Although it's a shame no one will notice the drum when you're playing it...) [w]

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-02-03 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Flattery will get you a lot of places.

Thank you! And yep, it's aluminum. The pattern is engraved. So pretty!
