Multiple exhibits

Shit shit shit shit shit. I have got to get a fucking Mother's Day card in the mail TONIGHT. Okay, self? Card. Tonight. NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

I love how actors are now encouraging (read: egging on) the (slash)fandom community. There have always been small pockets of support, but with The Avengers cast, it seems like things have really taken off. Mr. Cumberbatch seems pretty aware and cool, too. Exhibit A, Exhibit B, and Exhibit C.

Last night I had my first CrossFit casualty. During the warm-up I exhibited some bad form and put down the bar after a deadlift right into my left knee. Let me assure you, in case you were uncertain--in a battle between a kneecap and a 75-pound barbell? The barbell will win. But I did the the WOD anyway! I'll try to remember to get a photo of the bruise once it actually goes purple/black. It should be pretty impressive.

This was my first real WOD with the big kids, since the last time I went to a normal WOD time (not the Intro or Elements classes) we worked mostly on a skill set, not a WOD. Everyone was giving me really sympathetic looks as we warmed up because this was a pretty brutal WOD, made up by one of the locals. It is:

10 Chest-to-Bar pull-ups
20 Plyometric push-ups (basically Clapping push-ups)
30 Air squats
20 Sit-ups
10 Squat cleans (women, a 95lb barbell; men, 115lb)

Do all that, in that order, five times.

My modifications: After the third set, I skipped the push-ups (I couldn't do full push-ups after the first set, and after the second and third set of girly push-ups, no way was I balancing on my banged-up knee anymore), I cut the squats to only fifteen after the first set, and I used the ten-pound weighted PVC pipe for the squat cleans for the entire WOD. Um, yeah. Writing it all out like that, I feel like a total wimp. *tsk*

Only one of the women, Ellie, did it to prescription--which means she did it with no modifications (like cutting down the number of squats) or helper props (like bands for the pull-ups). It took her forty-five minutes. That woman is a fucking rock star and I want to be her someday.

I've really wanted a cig the past two days.

Where have you been going for your Avengers fic? Do you use fanfiction.net, or is there a better Avengers-centric site out there that I should frequent? I'm more interested in Bruce/Tony than Steve/Tony, just so you know.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly use Archive of Our Own (archiveofourown.org/) for fic. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to go out scouting for stuff, so most of what I've seen has been recc'd by people on my f-list.

TRAGICALLY, no Banner/Stark stuff has come across my radar yet, because YES PLEASE. I'll let you know if I come across something really hot. I'm sure it's out there.

I've been scouring the web for Bruce/Tony in my free time and have come across some good stuff. This rec list (http://red-sky.tumblr.com/post/23428277422/they-blinded-us-with-science-the-tony-bruce-fic-rec) has a bunch of really really good stuff on it - everything from fluffy crack fic to really hot sex.

AWESOME.

Thank you! I'll peek at this next week!

You're a badass rock star too

I can't think which of these I'd be able to do with or without modification. I just stubbed the hell out of my toe two days ago (it's now entirely purple) and I haven't run for a few days. Feeling restless.

Being slash-aware is great, but I wonder if any of these stars know about the tentacle porn? :D

HA HA HA HA! I wish I didn't know about tentacle porn.

And aawwwwwwwww. Thanks for the rock star compliment! XOXO

I feel like I should be in traction just thinking about that kind of workout. @_@

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Halfway through the WOD, I had a moment of "I can't fucking believe I'm doing this." It was a toss-up between am-I-insane or am-I-awesome. I think maybe both.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely vote for both. :D

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew I liked you both for a reason, after all.

*ow, ow*

Even when it hurts?

Okay, watching a dude do outrageous weight is one thing, and then I watched this gal off that link, Wowsa:

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She. Is. Awesome. How inspiring!

Even when it hurts?

Sometimes. =D

Luckily, I'm aware enough of my body to know when it's saying "this hurts, please stop" and "this hurts, but you're okay to keep going."

I might skip Friday's WOD, though, if the tendon swelling doesn't go down. As long as I kept moving last night, I wasn't in much more than surface pain. Today the pain has sunk deeper, into the tissues, and that's definitely "this hurts, please stop" status.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OH yeah, I meant the "even when it hurts" as an addition to the previous "even whens" ;) Go you!

Isn't it always the aftermath that gets us? I love *and kind of miss* that "ow, goddmitshitthishurts but OH I'M BADASS".. like doing a Turkish drop just right, but knowing I'll have a bruise.
I hope your knee gets better soon, and yes, I'll look at your bruise :) I'm sick like that. And.. whoda thought you'd ever say "I dropped a BARBELL on my knee" back in the day?!! Woot.

That Marisa's abs.. omigod.

For. Real.

Just reading that WOD made me feel a bit woozy.

Wait, no, I'm a tough guy. IT must be those two tubes of missing blood making me want to hide in the bathroom. Yeah, that's it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It really really helps that, as a baby CrossFitter, I often have no idea what I'm getting into until I'm already knee-deep (so to speak). Granted, it takes about everything I've got to walk through the door, but once we get started, I just keep going until I'm done.

edit: I just realized I missed the most important part of this comment, but someone walked in my office and I pushed "post" without finishing. And that most important part is:

I just keep going until I'm done and so would you.

You know, Chris sent out that "You guys should come for a free trial CrossFit lesson with me" e-mail a couple weeks ago, and I responded with something like, "That sounds great - after my thesis is done." Well, my thesis is done now, but reading your posts about CrossFit has been making me seriously reconsider. 0_0

I am FORTY-TWO GODDAMNED YEARS OLD.

I am OVERWEIGHT.

I am NOT PHYSICALLY FIT.

I have AN AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER.

I CAN DO CROSSFIT.

If I can do CrossFit, you can do CrossFit. It's just a matter of wanting it enough.

[identity profile] frugurl27.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure statements 2 and 3 are false. You look great.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she means, "Compared to some of the uber-fit CrossFitters who attend our gym."

But you CAN do it, as long as you want it!

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
that icon totally made me laugh!!

I could not do that WOD, not a chance! YOU ARE NOT A WIMP!! that is hard work!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. NOT A WIMP! Just not as strong as I will be, eventually.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't been to CrossFit in over a week because of this danged cold, and I am seriously itching to go.

The funniest injury I got was a huge glute cramp in the middle of doing wall balls. I yelled, "Ow! My ass!" and grabbed it. I laughed even while it hurt, because I'm 5 and sore butts make me laugh. Rolled it out with a foam roller and got right back to it and finished the workout.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha ha ha! *fistbump fellow five-year-old*

I laugh when I'm in pain, too. A couple weeks ago, when my right shoulder popped out of joint during headstand practice, I just rolled around on the ground to get it to pop back in, laughing and laughing. What a bizarre physiological response.

Girl, you need to have a SRS TALK with your body. Your immune system is fucking with you for no reason. =( WTH? I hope it shapes up soon.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack! Dislocations are bad! I'm glad you got that sucker right back in.

I know about the cold, right? Gah. Wanna doooo something! In the meantime, I did start a new sewing project. I haven't done anything other than a little bit of mending since moving to the house, so that's a good thing, at least. I'm making a basic sleeved cloak for larp.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Dislocations are bad! I'm glad you got that sucker right back in.

Me, too! =D My shoulders are hyper-flexible. Luckily, I've always been able to pop it right back in on the first try. Sometimes it pops back in all by itself, which is great.

Yay for new sewing projects! I look forward to seeing pics of your next Big Thing. these ensembles (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248761_10150198700284864_511799863_7221841_4948281_n.jpg) were so fab and gorgeous!
