Miss Representation

This is a fantastic eight-minute preview of a film about how the (mis)use of women in media is damaging to everyone, not just women.

Miss Representation 8 min. Trailer 8/23/11 from Miss Representation on Vimeo.

WATCH IT.

This is a good essay about the stupidity of Entertainment Weekly's question: "Could the heroine of Pixar's 'Brave' be gay?" But this addendum on Tumblr by someone I (unfortunately) don't know is even better. "God forbid you have a movie with a woman as the main character without a love interest. Nobody wants to watch that. She’s probably a lesbian. Fuck you."

Indeed.

what a great preview that is.

I look forward to seeing both these movies, actually. Really interesting points made about the Pixar film in that first essay.

I know I won't have the chance to see that documentary in a theater, but I'd like to see it somehow. I think. Then again, if I got that worked up in just an eight minute preview, I think sitting through the whole movie might give me a coronary. =D

Definitely want to see Brave in the theater, but with [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick swamped with CSSF stuff, I need to find someone else to take as my date!

The main character in Brave is a whiny, annoying, useless, irresponsible, peter-pan-complexed git, whether she is gay or not. What a disappointment that movie was. I don't know what we were expecting -- more adventure? more battles? more actual bravery? -- but whatever it was, that wasn't it. Saw it with a mixed group (boys/girls) of kids ranging from 9-14 and none of them liked it either (it was unanimously voted that we should have seen Mirror, Mirror a third time instead).

**I should add that we might have been biased toward disappointment because we were waiting and *waiting* for that to finally come out -- we actually almost went to the opening showing at 12:01 and would have, if we hadn't just been to the circus and just home from vegas -- and so we were left pretty open-mouthed that it was so NOT the movie we were expecting.

BOO HISS. That's really too bad. Sorry you had a rotten experience with it.
