It's what's for dinner

Hey wow! I still fucking hate this new posting format! Thanks, LJ!

From [livejournal.com profile] shanmonster comes this nauseating article about a new growth hormone being given to cows. I am so grateful that I have the financial capability to purchase only pastured, grass-fed beef.

Have I mentioned how much I'm enjoying the Restorative Yoga classes at Westside Yoga? The two teachers I've had, Yeshe and Susan, are great. Yeshe is cheerful and expressive and leads wonderful meditations. Susan is calm and maternal and her posture series are highly focused. I haven't taken a class with Becky yet (she and Yeshe trade off Sunday nights). I'm not sure how well I'll do in her classes, honestly. She's very sweet and nice, but she has a high-pitched little girl voice and I think that might not be helpful when I'm supposed to be chilling in a pose. We'll see. I'm keeping up with my morning home practice, so between that and the Westside classes, I'm getting in at least seven yoga sessions a week.

In other news, I am really tired today (no idea why--I slept great last night), and the pain in my left hip has gone from a general ache in the area to a specific muscle/tendon tightness somewhere in my hip external rotators. So today's not a great day. I hope I feel better after my nap. Which seems a long time from now. Ugh.

...and this is why I only by actual real pasture raised chicken.

I absolutely must carve out the time to improve my shooting skills so I can bag myself a deer or two next season.

Well if you ever need eggs - Rebecca sells them
And I have personally hugged those chickens!

Alas, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick is the only one in the house eating eggs anymore.

I'm not sure if this will hit the right muscle group but my hip flexor and sciatic pain was, surprisingly to me, helped with this exercise: http://www.ehow.com/video_4945577_cable-machine-exercises-abduction.html

Sorry that you're hurting.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I wonder if I can approximate that with bands or ankle weights.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for yoga practice!
I'm with you, I have a hard time with the little-girl voiced women. I look forward to trying classes with Susan.

And now that I've sold the zils, I think I can justify the month pass...maybe.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on the sale! Yay!

I'm curious, have you ever tried drinking MEDICAL GRADE protein supplements? Not the kind you get at Costco or a regular drug store, but things with protien isolate as the first ingredient? The whey supplement is lactose-free in the medical grade.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've looked into it, but I much prefer to food instead of relying on processed stuff, even if it means eating a can of sardines or something to get enough protein.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, YUCK.
No wonder chicken tastes nothing like it did when I was young and we grew our own! And now beef? I think I'll go back to buying a quarter.

On another food level, you may want to look into going to the Maxwell Game Preserve auction. They cull their buffalo herd annually and sell off the excess animals, for whatever use you want. Some go to butcher, some to new herds. And they may do the same with their elk herd as well; I just don't think I've heard about it. And to the best of my knowledge, the animals are entirely grass fed-I don't think they supplement at all.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Have you done it yourself? Is it significantly cheaper than buying a cow locally? Because considering in the extra time and costs I'd have to factor (bidding, driving to pick up), that could raise the final price by quite a bit.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I may have to pester my mom into raising some friers again. She hasn't done it in decades, but man-at the price of buying them from farms, it would be worth raising a couple of dozen and doing the butchering ourselves. And it takes two months, tops.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you got a packing house in mind? A good butcher can make a lot of difference, so get recs!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Steve's Meats in DeSoto is really close and gets good reviews from everyone.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't; I can get buffalo at my farmers' market here in Hutchinson, and the vendor sells year round at home.
It's probably more expensive, simply because it's buffalo v. cattle, but it would still be cheaper than buying by the pound from a shop; you're cutting out a lot of middle-man profit that way.

Here's a link to last year's sale; there's phone numbers to call for info:
http://www.kdwpt.state.ks.us/news/layout/set/print/KDWPT-Info/News/Weekly-News/11-1-12/MAXWELL-WILDLIFE-REFUGE-TO-HOST-BUFFALO-AUCTION

I do suggest you get some more folks to go in on it with you; that will be a bunchaton of meat!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, as long as beef is even $.10/lb cheaper, I'll stick with it. I (literally) can't afford the variety right now.

Thanks for the link, though! Maybe someday when I'm a bit more flush.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-02-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good!

I think my cousin's who hunt mostly go over to Canton to the butcher there (not that that makes any diff to you; too far away!); and, for proximity, I'd guess they also do most of the work for the Maxwell auction we were just discussing.

I'll be on liquid protein supplements for the rest of my life because I probably will not be able to eat the 80 to 100 grams that you need for health and weight loss.
Medical grade is expensive, but it actually tastes decent, which I'm glad for. And since there is a chicken soup flavor, it won't be all chocolate all the time.

Anyway I was just curious to know if it caused any of your usual issues.

I probably will not be able to eat the 80 to 100 grams that you need for health and weight loss.

Oh my goodness. What's up with that? D'you mind sharing details?

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2013-02-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You know the way Atkins and South Beach lead to weight loss? A lot of that has to do with getting a high protein intake. If you do not get enough, your body scavenges it from your muscles instead of from your fat.

http://www.unjury.com/store/protein/reg/weight_loss_protein.shtml

People who have had surgery often find they are gaining weight if they quit drinking their 2 protein a day. GNC does have this kind in the store -- the first ingredient HAS to be Whey Protein Isolate for it to be medical grade.

Interesting!

Do you think that the Optimum Nutrition (http://www.optimumnutrition.com/products/100-whey-gold-standard-p-201.html?zenid=b50e27137656b31da9ab6fcd56972acd) is comparable? It's whey protein isolate.

A friend of mine just told me that bison is being culled quite a bit right now due to the drought and the price has dropped significantly. I wonder if the Fort Riley herd is being culled. I'll have my dad see if he can find out.

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2013-02-17 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as Whey Protein Isolate is the first ingredient, you are good to go. Use 20 grams at a time, because that is about all your body can absorb. Probably at least two a day if you are also eating 3 meals.

You pretty much have to read the label.

I have deer in my back yard! KCK has in-city deer tags, though they may be bow-only.
