AIP report, end of second month

First, the numbers are good. From the original numbers on January 2, weight is down eight pounds; waist circumference is down two inches, navel is the same, hips are down two inches.

I don't feel healthier, but that might just be a mood thing. I don't very well remember my moods from day to day, and it's impossible for me to assign a scaled mood number based on any particular day. That would be super helpful, but if you asked me to rank my mood from 1 (want to crawl in a hole and die) to 10 (FAME! I'M GONNA LIVE FOREVER!) I would probably have to give three or four different numbers based on ever-varying criteria. Sooooo that won't really work for me.

My energy levels have certainly gone down from last month, but that's largely due to the insomnia problems. And I have no idea if the insomnia is a result of my body's changes on the AIP.

Overall, I find myself even more ambivalent about the AIP than I did at the end of the first month. I'm still sticking it out to April 2, though. No point in quitting the game two-thirds of the way through. I do think it's interesting that I've had no serious problems sticking with this for sixty days when I chucked my last two attempts at a Whole30. Is this perseverance mostly psychological or physiological? No idea.

Brief note on the insomnia issue: I started to wonder if maybe I was waking up because I was getting too hot at night. Perhaps my metabolism is changing (I am dropping about a pound a week). I know when I've been waking up, I've been pretty warm, but that's not terribly unusual. My body temperature goes up a couple degrees when I sleep. I've been like that since I was a kid. But perhaps I'm getting even warmer lately. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick generously bought me a down blanket to replace the enormous down comforter I've been using. I went to bed last night curious to see if the cure for my sleeplessness could have such an easy fix. I slept through my usual first-wake time of 12:30/1:00, but I woke at 2:15 from a stupid nightmare.

*bang head here*

I was able to fall back asleep within the hour and didn't wake up again until 6:15, at which time I got up and did my yoga. So I might not have made it through the night, but it was certainly a better night than has been normal the past couple weeks.

Prognosis: cautious optimism.

The sleep bit sounds like it might be helpful! I know I had to turn our thermostat down when I got those wonderful fleece sheets or I'd not sleep well at all.

Have you considered a mood tracker that takes sleep, exercise and different moods into account? I looked around and found one (https://www.moodtracker.com/plusinfo.php) with those differentials that looks like it will be helpful for me with my hormone therapy. (The symptom tracker King Pharmacy uses (http://www.king-rx.com/symptoms-list-form/)is too general for moods, although its great for physical symptoms for my dosage adjustments).

I'm going to try [livejournal.com profile] tama_grey's suggestion below for tracking stuff. It's brilliant!

Ratings systems

For anything I have to "rate" I find that limiting my rating options helps tremendously. I tend to use a 1-3 system instead of a 1-10 because it reduces my tendency to agonize.

After a few days/weeks of that, I have a feel for what I need from the rating, and I can refine my questions to get the data I need. "How did I feel today?" can become "How much energy did I have?, How did I feel when I woke up?, and Did I sleep well?" My ratings go from one number to three (2 vs 2/3/1), which helps me pinpoint problem areas.

(Then sometimes I get really geeky and enter them into a spreadsheet to graph and chart change over time, including standard deviation and averages. Because DATA.)

You are so smart! Seriously. Thank you. Gosh, I wish I'd mentioned this when I first started the AIP.

Oh yes!

I like that. I think one could combine that data collection with the ideas on this sample chart (https://www.moodtracker.com/samplechart.php) and get a really good set of data!
I think I'll work on this combination, too. I really like the reduced number system as well. I get the same sort of agonization on pain level questions (ooh, another set of data to track, got to figure how to work that in as well).

Yeay! I'm glad I can help! I'm probably a goldmine of creative workarounds for health awareness/improvement techniques, so feel free to ask anything anytime.

Good luck!

So hoping it's a little fix like that to help with sleep! I've had bad nights since we've moved back to a land with winter when I've tossed and turned, and it took forever to figure out that I was cold - not super cold, but not-quite-warm enough to drift off and stay asleep. I keep extra socks near the bed now for those nights... Crossing fingers for you that maybe this is just a rough transition period into something better.

Thank you for the crossed fingers. Last night wasn't bad, so yes, here's hoping!

Interesting re: sleep temperature.

I have been waking up one or two times a night because I am hot and sweaty. This really just started up this winter. I am so cold when I first get into bed that I want lots of covers, but later, I wake up boiling-ass hot.

I am sorry about your nightmare. Nightmares are a often major inconveniences.

I'm glad of the cautious optimism, though!

Try a heated mattress pad. Warm up your bed for an hour before you crawl in, and turn off the thing before you fall asleep. That worked for me for years. The bed's nice and warm when you're cold, and you're not suffocating under blankets when you finally warm up.
