Every boy should read that set of items while growing up in a culture where "fairness for all" means repression for those in privilege, "equality" means special rights for the oppressed, and "rape" is only codified in law because of the patriarchy's sense of property ownership over their wives, mothers, sisters, and so forth.
"Those of us trying to understand" from the cis-male POV need to continually keep trying to understand what it's like for women. I get the feeling that as soon as we stop trying, we encourage rape culture. THIS is what I was trying to wrap my mind around when, back in my undergrad days, I was first exposed to the concept of male feminists. I'm doing my best.
If one thing has come out of this whole mess, it's that people are talking about it. Admittedly my tumblr and facebook are a bit of a liberal echo chamber, but EVERYONE seems disgusted with the way most major news channels covered the trial and sentence.
People are pointing to the really shitty things people have said and are saying, "THAT. THAT is rape culture. THAT is what is wrong. THAT is what leads people to think that what they are doing is normal and fine."

mckitterick had the stomach to watch the actual video of the CNN coverage and read the comments. He said even the comments were shockingly good and only the obvious trolls weren't outraged.
