Big news first: Omar Faruk Tekbilek will perform at the Lied Center in September. No exaggeration, people, I started to cry when I saw the announcement. I was a little hormonal, yes, but OH MY GOD THIS MUSICIAN.

Being Homophobic doesn't make someone gay. That mindset just need to fucking die already. I know people who say stuff like this. I like some of those people. So please, please, please, if you've ever said or even thought something along the lines of "He doth protest too much--Must be gay!" Read that article. Please.

The vast majority of homophobes are straight. The vast majority of the law makers that oppress us, of the arseholes who rally against us, of the religions that screech hate at us, and of the brutal bastards who hunt us down, beat us and even kill us - THEY ARE STRAIGHT. The existence of closeted gay homophobes does NOT show that homophobia comes from gay people - it shows how powerful and damaging homophobia can be to gay people. You do not get to pass the responsibility for our oppression and persecution onto us. We should not tolerate the idea that it is the victims who are doing the victimising here. Homophobia is a product of straightness. Homophobia was a creation of straightness. Homophobia is perpetuated, honoured and enforced by straightness.

I love subcultures. I LOVE THEM. I love learning about them, being in them, watching other people enjoy their own cultures, etc. Subcultures. They're fucking awesome. Here's someone who understands and agrees with me.

LARPing is a perfect example. I don't do it, but on face value, if nothing was cool or dorky yet and we had to decide which was which, who wouldn't want it to be cool to get dressed up in period costume and run around in the woods playing with swords and horses and armor?

Here's a list of food brands and companies to avoid if you don't want to support GMO foods. I'm disappointed to see Tazo tea and Larabars listed. So relieved that EarthBound Farm Organic is absent. I eat a lot of their cauliflower and spinach.

Speaking of eating a lot of cauliflower and spinach, I'm trying an experiment with my diet. That experiment is: Eating More Vegetables. A conversation with mckitterick made us wonder if some of my swelling issues are due to incomplete fiber structures in my gut. And what better way to rebuild those than with extra helpings of soluble and insoluble fiber? So! More vegetables. I already eat more vegetables than most people I know, but for the next few months, I'm doing my best to double my vegetable intake at every meal. I'll be re-incorporating salads--something I haven't done in years since Kiva's caution to stay away from raw foods. But oh my goodness, I bought a mix of salad greens on impulse at Checker's last week (they were on mega-sale) and JFC they were delicious. Since I noticed no out-of-the-ordinary negative effects, I'm looking forward to having at least one green salad a day, now. MmmmMMMM!

Are you practicing good posture? Do you know all the reasons why you should? Are you breaking up your times of good posture with frequent standing/moving?

I read somewhere (no idea where) that homophobia (because it is generally geared at gay men) is an extension of anti-women attitudes. Homophobic men fear gay men because they fear they (the straight man) will be treated as a woman: objectified, hit on, ogled, "no" will no longer mean "no," etc.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's an extension</b. But I think they're very much related. Basically, it all comes down to fear of The Other, IMO.

To be fair, there have been an AWFUL lot of anti-homosexual activist politicians who have gotten outed hiring Rentboys and and hitting on policemen in bathrooms and whatnot in the last couple of years...

True. Though a noticed, steady pattern is where stereotypes come from. Of course, the problem with stereotypes is when you use the expected patterns instead of the actual events/people in front of you.

One aspect that the author didn't go into is that it is still using gay as a pejorative. If they are homophobic, then of course the term that must be the absolute biggest hit to them is 'gay', right? Kind of like calling out a Klansman on having a black uncle. Nobody is going to argue "He's pushing for a 'defense of marriage act, he must be STRAIGHT!"

Fuck yes - I suggest kale, if you've ever had/liked it, in salad. Not terribly expensive at all, and really rich in vitamins and all that fun stuff.

I wish I had the luxury of avoiding some of those food companies, but plainly put, I can't afford to. I'm not sure I really buy into product boycotts anyway; it makes about as much sense to me as a one-day gas boycott. It's a nice thing to do if one has the option to replace it with something else of equal/better value, and it makes sense if the product is dangerous, i.e. stuffed full of pesticides (hello, Celestial Seasonings >:|) but I don't like the feeling I often get from these lists that somehow one is a bad person/BETRAYING THE CAUSE if they continue to make use of the products anyway, for all the good it does.

IOW, if you've got the choice and the money and can afford those principles, great. But I have a very small food budget and have to take what I can get, so Wal-Mart it is.
