We don't follow fashion

BREAKING NEWS: The pathology report just came in! Diagnosis: Seborrheic keratosis, irritated and inflamed. No evidence of malignancy.

You NEED this in your life. SFW. Seriously. Watch it.

I got a bill for the cortisol test I had done at Dr. Burt's office in March. The one that I had to go in to talk to him about, and pay a co-pay, so he would sign off on it and send it to insurance. Guess what? It never went to insurance. I got a direct bill from Quest Diagnostics. FUCK YOU, FIRSTMED. I am so so so done with you fucking asshats. Calling them today, and if I have to go in for another appointment and another co-pay, I'm not sure what I'll do. What sort of recourse do I have? Other than shaking my tiny fist in anger?

The wound in my shoulder is starting to hurt more, which is annoying. I suppose it's logical. Things tend to hurt more as the skin heals. I can't bear to put a bandage on it anymore because the surrounding skin is starting to get irritated from the adhesive. I hope it doesn't dry out too much without being covered. I'm not even thinking about what I'm going to have to deal with if this is actually SOMETHING. You know? nope nope nope nope nope Don't have to worry about that anymore!

In much-better-even-good news, I did my weight-bearing/high intensity ACTIVITIES today (still trying to think of "working out" as "activity" so as to not overburden my adrenals) and I feel good. My legs are a little shaky (still!), but internally I feel pretty great. Burpees kill me, though. Man. I can't do ten in a row without getting winded and feeling wobbly. Forgot to mention, though, at Sunday's session with Andrew I did deadlift reps (five sets of seven) at 95lbs, which was my two-rep max when I first started Crossfit last year. That was encouraging!

Andrew gave me a movement to build up my lower abs so they can engage (taking over from the hip flexors and adductors) on Knee-to-Elbows. I was getting frustrated with those because I can't even get my legs to a 90-degree angle before things just stop firing. I can hang there and squeeze and flex and try my damnedest to get my knees higher, but nothing happens. I'm not exhausted, I'm not at full range of motion, I'm just stuck. It's weird. So I'm doing these crunches where I hold a dumbbell (eight or ten pounds) between my feet, lie on my back with arms overhead clutching something stable, and then do the Knees-to-Elbow movement. The trick is to keep the upper abs curled in and not let the middle back come up off the floor. Man, that is hard! I don't remember the last time my abs were sore like this. I like that feeling because it tells me something got worked for the first time in a long time.

Today's Tumblr collection is Tuesday, June 25: Things I Would Wear (given appropriate weather and finances). Alas, the Kansas climate doesn't facilitate dressing like Adam Ant Visits Thunderdome for more than two or three weeks out of the year.

"Diagnosis: Seborrheic keratosis"

Welcome to the club. I have/get those too.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
How often do they show up? Are they usually in the same area? I don't care about having spots on me (I've been covered in moles/freckles since I was a kid), and I'd rather not go trotting off to have these things removed if I don't need to.

In order of importance:

Woot! And 2 min nonstop jazz hands for no malignancy!!

Impressive on the deadlifts!

I'm totally borrowing the instructions for the ab work because I also cannot do hanging knees to elbows and get very frustrated.

It's a good day :-)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a LOT of jazz hands. =D

I'm glad I could help with your knees-to-elbows! If I learn more, I'll share. It's one of those things where I'm like I should totally be able to do that. WHY CAN'T I DO THAT?

YIPPEE!!!
Can you use some no-stick pads and (gentle stick) medical adhesive tape? I have plenty. I'm thinking treating it like a burn might help? My poor leg wound is still a deep red mark, so I'm trying Vit E oil on it now.

What is it with First Med and their billing dept? I know medical billing and coding is complicated and all, but they seem to f-up regularly on it. Well, probably no more than other offices, we are having to submit receipts and pay back a $149 charge on our FlexSpend debit card because the dental office made the charges last year but didn't bill Jbird until he went in January to get the permanent crown. Since the office submitted the full charges in December, we can't use what he paid in January! Grrr.

That vid is adorable! I don't think those guys had to teach that fella much! Did you see the "Popping While Feeding Sheep" vid of his? DAYUM.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Good idea on the pads and medical tape. I don't think we have any, but Walgreen's is only like four blocks from our house. Maybe I'll run a few errands after work.

GOD, FIRSTMED. So glad I found Dr. Harris at LFM&O.

FUCK YES on the diagnosis! Whew!

Just watching the first few seconds of the knees-to-elbow video is making my abs hurt in sympathy. OMFG. But then, last I checked I couldn't hang from a bar for very long either.

It's kinda like when I saw a list of exercises based on plank pose: I laughed because at the time, I could barely hold plank for a whole minute. By the end my arms would be shaking. The idea of over ten minutes of doing stuff in plank was just absurd.

I'm tempted to see how I'd do now. I know I'm getting a ton stronger than I was, but when your baseline is so low to start with...

The thing I'm really curious about? Those roll-up/roll-down things. Where, for instance, you're sitting with your legs straight out in front of you and then you roll your spine down until you're flat on the ground, or you're lying flat on the ground and slowly roll up. I've never EVER been able to do those without my feet coming up off the floor, and I honestly don't know if it's truly a lack of abdominal strength, or if it's just physics related to the top half of my body having more weight than the second half. I just know I still can't do them.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-06-27 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Holding plank for ten minutes is crazy. I can hold plank for three sets of thirty seconds. I used to be able to hold it for a minute, and I thought that was pretty good. Honestly, holding any pose for more than a minute is kinda wasted effort. If you're going for that sort of thing, add weight. I mean, it's a neat party trick (one of the trainers at Crossfit can solve a Rubic's Cube while in plank pose with someone sitting on his back), but that's all.

The roll-up-down things are core strength and (I think) thoracic flexibility. I can do those pretty easily, and believe me, I've got a lot more weight in my top half. So I think it must be mostly upper core strength, which I've got in spades.

I'm working on my hanging strength, too. That's not just important for chin-ups, etc., but also for holding onto the bar when I'm doing deadlifts and things with heavy weight. Gotta train my hands not to cramp or let go!
