Shake it

Heads up: I'll be dancing at Aladdin Café this Thursday. Dancing starts around 7:30 and goes until around 9:00 or so. Also, the annual local bellydance show Cairo on the Kaw is July 24 & 25. I'll make a separate post with full information about that.

[livejournal.com profile] misia provides another article about the Bush regime's possible plans to "postpone" elections this year. Be afraid. Be very afraid. But fear does not mean inaction. Write letters, register to vote, and spread the word.

Since my house served as the reception site for the 2004 Campbell Conference, I had rather a busy weekend. Had a large number of guests on Friday (including Brian Aldiss, Greg Bear, Harry Harrison, Frederik Pohl, and George Zebrowski--all in my house! Squeeeee!). Of those four, Mr. Zebrowski was the only one I got a chance to talk to (and very briefly at that), but he was quite charming. In fact, the vast majority of the people at the reception were quite charming. I love hostessing. It was nice to get to chat with [livejournal.com profile] worldforger finally. Nothing better than sitting in a circle on the back patio with [livejournal.com profile] adamcrafter, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick, [livejournal.com profile] worldforger, and M.C. (who is not on LJ), talking about...breasts! And other things. All in all, I think about 50 people showed up for the reception. And they all ate like birds! Sooooo much food & drink left over. You can tell this wasn't a college crowd. Still...authors? I expected more of them. Saturday night saw a much smaller but still quite lively group that finally got shooed home around 2 a.m.

I had the pleasure of spending Saturday morning and early afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] rougewench, doing some wig shopping and chatting about whoredom. Fingered fabrics at Cy Rudnick's and got some ideas about costume. I think I'll be able to use some fabrics I originally purchased for dance costumes. Good heavy upholstery weight brocades and a nice olive green for a skirt that matches all three possible fabric options for the bodices. Whee! Costuming on the cheap is a good thing since I bought two wigs--a curly one and a straight one. The straight one makes me look a lot like Aeryn Sun. I have been threatened with certain death by [livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson if I do not dress as Aeryn for Halloween this year. I'll just need liposuction and something to make my legs four inches longer by October.

And because my co-worker (who is back to work after a two week vacation) will not stop talking to me, it took me an hour to write this entry. Sheesh.

Johnny and I were talking about that yesterday. Scaaaaary!

Sounds like you had a great weekend! Wish I could've been there. :)

It was very different than a rockabilly weekender, let me tell ya.

Good conversations always happen on the back porch!

I'll join [livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson in the lynching if there isn't an Aeryn Sun costume!

I need to decide which outfit of hers will best mask my stumpy legs and flabby abs...

Aerun Sun...mrOWr!@

If you dress as Aerun Sun, I'll let you pick what I should dress up as for Halloween.

You were a saint, allowing everyone to grind caramel corn into the carpet.

Oooo. Ponder, ponder. Maybe you should just wear that gorgeous PVC ballgown again. It's glorious!

allowing everyone to grind caramel corn into the carpet

Eh. We're ditching that carpet as soon as we can afford new flooring anyway.

*nods* I like talking about breasts. Breasts make me happy.
:-)
And thank you so much for having us.

Wow. I bought a book in the early 80's. I think it was A Reader's Guide to Science Fiction and it had a list in the back of a suggested basic library (http://home.comcast.net/~dwtaylor1/searlesscifi.html). I actually collected all the books (which was pretty hard before the Internet and Amazon as many were already out of print). I've got books by both Aldiss and Pohl sitting above my monitor at home.

My second thought after "Wow, I know who these guys are", was "Wow, these guys aren't dead yet".

Also, [livejournal.com profile] chernobylred didn't mention other author-guests at her house included Robin Wayne Bailey, Gregory Benford, James Gunn, Kij Johnson (of course), Jack McDevitt (this year's Campbell Award winner), and Pamela Sargent. Also the former director of NASA's Sojourner rover program. I s'pose she can be forgiven on account of not being introduced. And I counted at least 70 discrete guests over the night.

Wow, whatta hostess. [livejournal.com profile] chernobylred rocks!

Thanks,
Chris

Dude, Donna Shirley was there??? Man, I really wanted to meet her. Damn.

Well, while I'm shamelessly namedropping (eyelash flutter) James Gunn (http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/authors/James_E_Gunn.htm) is the main organizer of this Conference. He's a professor emeritus here and I do his photocopying (yes, yes, it's true. I might not be a star fucker, but I am mad for writers). If you haven't read any of his stuff, I highly recommend The Listeners, recently republished. It was Carl Sagan's inspiration for Contact and is, IMO, a better (and less cumbersome) read.

Honey, next year if you wanna come out to fucking Kansas for the Campbell Conference, I will have the guest room decorated and sparkling for you guys. Seriously. Just let me know in advance so I can get it done in time for the paint fumes to dissapate.
