Oh for chrissake

Yesterday on FB, [livejournal.com profile] sdemory said how an author he was reading used the phrase "the black" to refer to a man of color.

Today on a friend's FB post about the Turing pardon (which, don't even get me started), someone left the comment "At least it's a step in the right direction. She's now,a staunch supporter of the gays. Queen Lizzie has right idea. Let's move forward from here on in."

The gays? The gays.

This is me, not getting involved in a FB fight with someone I don't even know.

GOLD STAR FOR ME, MOTHERFUCKERS.

(Had a moment of self-amusement that I then thought might be misconstrued, so opted to delete the comment. Apologies if it was seen as being in bad taste - sometimes the dark humor doesn't translate as well as intended.)

I was trying to figure out how to respond. I understand it was meant to be funny, but...yeah.

Thanks for being awesome!

I fully blame having sat through Movie 43 yesterday for that blip in my state of awareness. :\

Thanks for not flipping out on me. :)

I hadn't even heard of that movie until I searched for it just now. Read the plot synopsis on IMDB and...just...

You. Poor. Thing. WHY?

It was one of those movies that someone had told me was so awful it was hilarious, and I saw it was available on Netflix so thought I'd give it a whirl while I soaked off the shellac from my nails. The first piece was jaw-dropping but bizarrely funny, but then it plummeted downhill from there. My hands were stuck in acetone with gooey fingernails, so I figured I'd just wait it out and see if anything redeeming happened as the film went on. Chris came up from the basement and caught a snippet of it, and then stood there for the rest of the film, saying, "Oh my GOD!!" and, "Oh no they DIDN'T!" and that became a source of amusement for me, heh. But yeah, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and don't want to sit through it again. Ever.

I wondered if I just didn't "get" Movie 43 because you know how there are movies like that? Examples off the top of my head are The Life Aquatic which I thought was almost painfully funny and brilliant and I know that a lot of people thought was "just dumb" and Napoleon Dynamite, which bunches of people loved but which I think I was maybe too old for because I thought it was almost unwatchable in its stupidity. So, I thought maybe Movie 43 was like that, and I was just on the wrong side of some appreciation line. But, no. I really think Just. No.

There are definitely movies that some people just--hook up with, and others don't (I'm thinking of 21 Jump Street which is probably one of my favorite movies of all time) and I can understand each side. Movie 43 sounds like a bad thing all around.
