Okay, so this might not blow your mind as much as it did mine, but HOLY SHIT WOW YOU GUYS. That amazing "cover" of Wrecking Ball that went along with the Sherlock vid earlier this week? That was just Autotune making Miley Cyrus sound like a guy. HOW FUCKING AWESOME IS THAT?

THAT IS MEGA FUCKING AWESOME.

I am totally fine with Autotune. I kinda have to be since I listen to more pop music than any other person of my age that I know Whoops! Never mind. I forgot about zitronenhai.


I don't see the difference between using Autotune to adjust a voice and using a wah-wah pedal for a guitar. The human voice is an instrument and if technology can be used to tweak it in artistic ways, that's super cool. I find it tiresome when a singer routinely uses it to improve a lackluster voice on an album and then can't sing live for shit--there needs to be some basic talent in the first place--but in general, Autotune is fine in my book.

Because it can do stuff like this.

Pretty sure you're reading the info wrong. They say things like "Male Version edit By Marcus Morreale" which means Mr. Morreale is the person who did the Autotune version, not that he actually sang it.

When I first heard the male version of the Miley song, I was wondering if they slowed it down, since all her "attacks" (they're weren't really attacks, more like squeaks, really) were present (part of my brain is still living in analog days, which is something I need to fix). Same goes for the way Katy's voice cracks. All of the signature markers of each singer's style, and of the particular vocal that was retuned, are present and obvious. There is no doubt whatsoever that the original vocals have been tuned down.

Those weak attack notes are what keep me from being able to love the original version. I really really like the song, but the lyrics need a more soulful voice.

It's a vocal effect, a technological means of coloring and texturizing sound. It's the grandchild of the vocoder! Why not enjoy it?
