Yeah, I'm an exercise snob. So?

How do I get my hair to look like Tilda Swinton's character in Only Lovers Left Alive? Seriously. I mean, seriously. I love it. I want it. Only, you know, the opposite color.

A truer gifset was never posted.

Breaking Muscle (still my favorite fitness blog!) has a post on building the skills to do a handstand, and it's not all about strength.

Speaking of strength, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick and I went to the Ambler Rec Center yesterday since Robinson's hours suck during the semester interim. When classes aren't in session, Robinson is only open until 5pm. Even though when classes aren't in session, it's only available to faculty and staff. And staff usually work until 5pm. What the fuck, Robinson. Anyway. Ambler was letting faculty and staff use the facility for free this week and I was kind of excited to try it out because it's huge and new(ish) and shiny and all and BOY HOWDY DID IT SUCK.

The place is packed, and I mean packed with elliptical machines. That should've been my first clue to just get the fuck out, but we were already there, and it was way too late to hit Robinson. Just...elliptical machines everywhere, and lots of Nautilus machines, of course. There were only two, count them, two standing racks for barbell work, and they had stupid bars attached to them at the bottom, making an L-shape, that are (I'm sure) there to help you if you get stuck in the bottom of a squat, but what they actually wind up doing is keeping shorter people from being able to do a proper at-or-below-parallel squat. So I had to back out into the middle of the area to do my weighted squats. And there was no good place to do dead-lifts at all and so I did those in the middle of the traffic area, too, and they were really fucking annoying to do because Ambler's weight plates are hexagonal and so don't roll so pulling the bar up to my shins to set up for a dead-lift was impossible and I had to walk up to the bar instead and then squat down and that sounds like a little thing but it really, really isn't. And now let me tell you about the horrible floor, which was not the black padding you normally see in weight rooms. No, no, it was this slick linoleum stuff that was barely softer than concrete and I'll let you guess how awesome that was on my knees for doing weighted overhead squats (hint: It Wasn't). The final insult was that the locker rooms are downstairs, so not only did I have to deal with all the other crap just to get through my workout, but once I was done I had to go downstairs and then back up them again because my coat and hat, etc., were all in the downstairs locker room. This was especially upsetting because I think I mentioned yesterday that STAIRS ARE HARD, Y'ALL.

Since I am taking a vacation day on Friday, we are so going back to Robinson and getting our workout in before 5:00 that day. Then next week things are back to normal hours. THANK. GOD. If I never set foot in Ambler Rec Center again, that will be just fine. It was everything I hate in a gym. In fact, now that I think about it, it's not a gym. It's a "fitness center" and I guess I should have figured that out earlier.

On the bright side, I'm certainly not tempted to shell out the cash for a membership to Ambler (which is, I'm sure, the reason they offer that free week of usage to faculty/staff). I can still use Robinson, wonderfully crappy, bare-bones, no-frills Robinson, for free most of the year.

Love that weightlifter gif. Hypnotized by the way her back knee, her bangs, and her boobs all bounce at the same time. Must mean she's...uh, balanced.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
VERY BALANCED. YES. FRONT AND BACK.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Her hair is the hair I think I am supposed to have instead of the limp mess I was born with. Except I'd like dark red please. Either way, extensions.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. You think? I mean, I have that much hair. I just need product and styling tips. Maybe I should just, you know, talk to my stylist about this.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with the salt water idea below. It looks almost dreaded, so product plus backcombing plus twisting might work.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the product alone might do it. My hair starts to look like a lion's mane with just a bit of product (no backcombing or other manipulation) after just a few days of no washing. So maybe the beach hair stuff will make it piecey enough that it'll last overnight. Wetting my hair down every morning in the winter is just not an option.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Try looking for salt water spray recipes online. I checked them out once but never bothered to make any as my hair is pretty much hopeless.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
My inner librarian ended up poking around online, came up with some hits for temporary dreads for white hair, which could be put throughout for the effect. Seems like a lot of people say to section the hair coat the piece your working on with gel, then twist. You can backcomb it a bit, too. And flatiron it to hold. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlIw5H0KtYs

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Um I think once you dread your hair, it's done until you cut it out. Oh! Ask Kimberly (bellydancer), she's on FB.
Extensions may be your option for that look because um yak and goat hair?

“The hair thing was really interesting,” Jarmusch said. “I wanted them to have wild hair, I wanted them to look partly animalistic, even behave like half animals and half very sophisticated humans. So we were trying to make these wigs, trying on different things in Cologne, Germany, working with Gerd (Zeiss), our hair and makeup designer. And we just weren’t getting an interesting texture, and we were looking at different textures of hair in photographs online, and Tilda said, ‘Well you keep saying the animal thing is missing, why are we just looking at humans, let’s start looking at animal fur.’ So we started looking at animals, and different monkeys and llamas and different textures of fur and hair. Then Gerd said that he had, in the past, mixed some goat and yak fur into human hair to make it thicker, and Tilda was like, ‘Let’s try that!’ So in the end, the wigs for John Hurt, Tilda, Tom and Mia were made of a certain percentage human hair mixed with goat and yak.”

I definitely DO NOT want dreads. I just want it to look piecey and messy sometimes.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh whew. I was wondering what they'd done with [livejournal.com profile] clevermanka

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The free week here (for classes at the rec center, not the membership that I've already purchased) is next week. They have a 30 minute core class that I really want to try and I can't make it any of the three trial days. It's just a bad week for me work-wise because I am on for two after hours events.

I don't want to buy a semester pass if it isn't going to work out for me (as the semester pass for lunchtime yoga did NOT work). pfft.

I don't even know what the offer by way of weights here. I run on the track, the ellipticals and such are in one room that looks really crowded and unpleasand, and the weights are in another room. There is a really nice pool that kinda makes me wish I were a swimmer.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It couldn't hurt to ask someone in person (an adult manager, not a student worker) if they'd be willing to extend the offer to a different week for you.

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
good call! I didn't even think about that.

How do I get my hair to look like Tilda Swinton's character in Only Lovers Left Alive?

I just have to wash it at night, go to bed with it wet and then get up and brush it and then go about my day. It will look just like the first two photos, although hers look like it is teased a little. I'd have to tease it around my forehead to keep it back like that.

Except, a different color.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? It separates like that into those lovely piecey bits all on its own? JELIS.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2014-01-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I would try a beach hair (https://www.google.com/search?q=beach+hair+product&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS563US563&espv=210&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=mvvWUtPRG>iOyAGq4oFw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1600&bih=778) product. Something with salt in it, that makes your hair crusty, textured, grungy and piecey like that. Then, yes, it looks like her crown is teased and the whole thing is probably hair sprayed and styled. But a product like that would probably do it to get you most of the way there (http://www.eligiblemagazine.com/2012/05/14/oribe-apres-beach-spray/), because I can get my hair all piecey and textured with one and i have very fine straight thin hair.

AWWWWW YISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Thank you, bb!

Ambler does have a pretty awesome rock climbing wall, though.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That it does!

[identity profile] sherwood21.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
THAT GIFSET. *dies*

Also, I'm sorry Ambler sucks. At least now you know and you didn't put any money out for it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE MENTIONED THE GIFSET

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Forgot to add: that movie is going to leave me with many kinds of wanting.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
God, tell me about it. I'm trying to avoid getting too worked up about it, but eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Continues

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] pamelonian.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I worked out at the Rec Center (that's what they called it then) in '05-'06. It sucked then. I haven't seen it since the expansion, but I am not surprised to hear that it still sucks. If anything, it sounds like they added more ellipticals and took out some free weights.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-16 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really too bad. SO MUCH MONEY. So much money...

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2014-01-17 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the gifset and I don't even watch Sherlock.

Don't beat me.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-18 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't either, but you know... Princess Bride ref FTW!!
