Empty Bar

Human brain now registers smiley face emoticon as real facial expression. OH MAN I FUCKING LOVE THE INTERNET.

If you haven't read the essay from the Duke University Porn Star, I encourage you to do so.

"I, like all other sex workers, want to be treated with dignity and respect. I want equal representation under the law and within societal institutions. I want people to acknowledge our humanity. I want people to listen to our unique narratives and dialogues.

To the anti-pornography feminists out there: I very much respect your opinion. Nevertheless, I want you to consider how you marginalize a group of women by condemning their actions. Consider that when you demean women for participating in sex work, you are demeaning THEM, and consequently, YOU become the problem.

Please do not continue to make the mistake you have made in the past of ignoring the voices of minority communities. Listen. Listen to the women who have for so long been silenced. Listen to their thoughts and their needs. Only then can we achieve solidarity and true progress within our movement."

Along a similar vein is this video starring Carmen Carrera, a transwoman and model. NSFW, but amazing.

Carmen's personal essay about the experience and her motivations for doing the video is here.

I want to leave something behind so people can look back one day and say, "Wow, remember when transpeople were discriminated against the most? This person was like, ‘Screw everybody! I’m going to parade around half-naked and be superproud, because that’s how everyone should be!’"

This weekend I spent money I didn't have on a neutral matte makeup palette from Stila. I need a neutral palette for travel because I'm tired of carting around a bag full of single pot colors and I wanted a matte collection because Reasons. It would've been nice to shop around a bit more before purchasing, but no time (or gas money) to hit Sephora in Kansas City. So picked this up from the local Beauty Brands (also, BB has a faboo return policy and they're local, so no driving to KC for a return). I was able to combine a $3.50 off coupon with my 10% off voucher that I've been holding onto for ... a year? and saved nearly $8 so my total came in just under $35. This is my second day wearing the colors from it and I'm *this close* to chucking all my old single-pot eyeshadows and replacing them with the other Stila palettes. THIS COLOR IS AMAZING. It doesn't look so much like pigment resting on my skin as it looks like my skin is actually stained/pigmented. And it lasted all day yesterday, through kitchen chores and laundry and even an occasion when I rubbed by eye because I forgot I was wearing eyeshadow. Very happy I took a chance on these.

My session with Andrew wasn't quite as thrilling, but it was good and informative. Last week wasn't a good week for me, physically. I felt worn down and fatigued, I had some swelling issues, and I started spotting on Wednesday. On Saturday I started bleeding for real (five days early) and the cramps were pretty bad. But I went to my training session on Sunday and just warned Andrew that I wasn't feeling at peak fitness. After the session he said it was interesting to watch me perform all the lifts with perfect mechanics and form, but at twenty to twenty-five percent less strength than previously. On the push press and bench press I struggled with just the empty 45lb. bar. We talked a little bit about how people can psych themselves out of lifting a weight because they think it's too heavy for them and he said he could tell that wasn't the problem (and he's seen me psych myself out of lifting a weight). He could see me reaching for it, could see my arms shaking with the effort, but the weight just wouldn't go up. So now I have something close to actual proof that my occasional weakness and fatigue isn't psychological. My body is actually chemically, physically weaker when I'm having A Spell. FASCINATING.

And then I spent pretty much the rest of the day alternating Couch Time with Folding Laundry. So grateful [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick was home most of the day so he could carry the laundry baskets up the stairs for me.

Update: Well shit. Harold Ramis died.

I just saw that about Harold Ramis and I'm very sad :(

I haven't read the essay from the Duke U porn star yet but I intend to. It's weird - I kind of identify with her a little bit because I'm part of the sex industry as well, just on the retail end of it. We're treated pretty badly on a fairly regular basis and we're just selling toys and lingerie. I'm going to read that tonight, if I can.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-02-24 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that thing about people throwing stuff at your fellow employees? NOT COOL.

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2014-02-24 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?! That sort of thing happens more and more often. It's ridiculous! We get morons making prank calls to the store, wasting our time and having a laugh at our expense, and idiots getting shirty with us because we don't have "lingerie models" for them. It's ridiculous!

I am sending that link about the emoticons to my old Neuroscience professor. I bet he will love it.

I wonder what our brains do when confronted with emoticons that we know are emoticons but that we don't get. (For the longest time, I wasn't sure what >.> was)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-02-25 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I love the side-eye emoticons. I prefer them with the long mouth, though.

>_>

<_< But my all-time favorite is o_O

[identity profile] seascribe.livejournal.com 2014-02-25 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, they make more sense that way!

I need to use o_O more in my daily conversations. What a great emoticon.

And when something is REALLY nuts, you can switch eyes.

o_O

O_o

Or the shocked version with pursed lips

o.O

Man, how much do I fucking love the internet. SO MUCH.

If you're up for some lighters and melting plastic and prying a bit with knives and tweezers I highly recommend depotting your single shadows into a large magnetic Z-Palette. (Or three.) I love everything about the process, especially how you can rearrange at will forever. I recommend the small metal stickers over the large round ones. There are a million YouTube tutorials for the process if you're unfamiliar. So fun and so great! I do still love a good high-end palette though and that Stila one looks wonderful.

Honestly, this sounds like the best Sunday afternoon EVER. I'll look into a Z-Palette this week! I've seen you mention them on your LJ but never really paid attention to what they are. D'you know any websites that sell them especially cheaper than other places?

I really really enjoyed it.

I ended up ordering from Amazon. I got the large and ended up wanting 2 large plus one smaller for travel - it's AMAZING. I can put several small shadows, a blush, some pan eyeliner, even a pan powder or concealer in there and it travels in the space of ONE blush compact before.

Here's EmilyNoel83 talking about them:

Large pans are harder to depot without cracking (though you can usually patch cracks with a finger moistened with rubbing alcohol). Small pans are easier - some brands now intentionally use glues that are easy to melt/break etc because so many people do it. Sephora pans pop right out now, for example.

Some brands are in a steel pan that will magnetize on its own, some are in an aluminum pan that needs a magnetic sticker to use with the palette.

You can also use a magnetic sticker to cover the pan if there is glue residue you don't feel like scraping off.

Usually I hold a lighter under the palette for a few seconds and then sort of bend the palette to see if the pans are coming loose - lighter, bend, lighter, bend, etc. I do it next to a sink in case a label catches fire or something. :) Once the pan is even SLIGHTLY coming away I stick the end of a knife in and pry it up - when the glue is hot this is usually a pretty easy step - you want to have someplace read to PUT the hot little metal pan with melted glue on it. I usually set it on the bathroom counter, sometimes with some tissue under it. You can scrape the glue while it's hot with the knife, or sometimes it's more a "gummy" style glue and you can peel it off. Watch out because it's hot, duh, but really. I always end up being like ow ow at least once. :)

I know you don't like Amazon but that's the easiest for me to link to - other distributers have these on ebay, etc.

Small magnetic stickers: http://www.amazon.com/Palette-Magnetic-Stickers-Non-Magnetized-Palettes/dp/B008FY1VHO

I think those are easier than the round ones, but the round are more popular:

You could also fake it with any small magnetic metal bits and your own glue.

Some people write the name of the shadow color on the bottom of the magnet for identifying later. I usually don't care since I group them by color.

Have fun! It's messy and gross but I love the whole process and the finished palettes are SO GREAT compared to all those annoying little singles and doubles you have floating around your kit for ages.

Actually I take that back. When I ordered my first one they were actually the same price on the main Z Palette website so I just got it there:

I found some factory-seconds on eBay for super cheap and I don't care about scratches as long as the windows aren't actually cracked, you know? Pretty sure I'm going to need the Dome version because most of my eyeshadows are baked domes. Tonight when I get home I'm going to eyeball how many I think can fit into a palette and order as necessary.

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2014-02-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh! That factory-seconds thing sounds great!! :)

And yes to the domed ones. I have a few Milani baked eyeshadows with the curved top (on the terra cotta tile base) and it presses against the clear top of my non-dome one. Mostly because of the tile rather than the powder, but it doesn't matter, tall is tall.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. So fun. Henry was seriously like WHAT are you DOING In there because there was lighter sounds and strange burning plastic smells and me being like "This is amazing! Yay!"

I am now obsessed with this idea and shall not rest until I've done it.

Bless you for typing all that out, too. The tips and tricks are much appreciated!

I LOVE that essay.

and this makeup thread is going in memories right now, because I'm thrilled about it but don't have time to follow all the linkylink right now
