Baby, you’re starlight

I'm scheduled to appear in Prof. Marta Vicente's class WGSS/HIST 324 "History of Women and the Body" this December. She asked me to speak to the class about attitudes toward women's bodies in bellydancing and then to give a short demo. We'll talk beforehand about what she's expecting as far as performance (I'm not changing into full makeup and bedlah for a volunteer five-minute gig) and what sort of things she'd like me to address (so I can be prepared for questions).

My preparations to resume home yoga practice were given a boost by this timely article on the Whole30 blog. Breaking Muscle had a well-timed and no-nonsense article on injury and healing, too. I need to get back in the game, even if it's a different game than I was playing a couple months ago.

Today's Tumblr collection is Tuesday, August 19: Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Thanks for the nudge toward getting back to yoga. I've been thinking that I need to do that again--but this time in TINY baby steps so I don't hurt myself and spend a week immobilized and whimpering for Vicodin like I did the last time I tried to reactivate my yoga practice. I need to remember what my martial arts instructor said when he was trying to teach me hap ki do: DO NOT USE BRUTE FORCE. (He always spoke with the capslock on.)

The only thing I didn't like about the article was this: When was the last time you were barefoot and connecting with your mind and body? (In the sand in Maui with a Mai Tai doesn’t count). Hey, if I were in the sand on Maui with a Mai Tai, I would so totally be connected with my mind and body! IJS.

Ha! I agree.

My first (and most beloved) yoga teacher said to think of the body like a toddler. Or a teenager. Suggest it do things. If it's in a good mood, you can even try asking. But making demands on it, regardless of its feelings in the matter, is a sure way to get it to rebel.

How exciting about the class!

Also, I really want to look at your Tumblr, but I'm not sure my heart can take all the awesome that is Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you never hear from me again, it's because I died over him.

After yesterday's All Ferguson All The Time, I think my followers needed a bit of relief, and what better way to soothe a furrowed brow than with Mr. N deGT?

Yay yoga!!

Can you perhaps show video of a performance, rather than doing a "demo"? I think when people ask us for demos like this, they don't realize all the preparation and time that goes into a performance, or that it's a different aspect/persona of ourselves in talk/educating mode.

Honestly, I'd rather do it in person. That would take me less work than making a video. Since it's in the middle of the workday, it's not like I'm going to be in full makeup and costume. Just normal office makeup and what I'd wear to a dance workshop or something.

:) I was thinking of your Bond Girl vid. I really love that one.

YAS! We have just started watching Cosmios, and besides being generally enthralled, the smart, elegant genius of NdGT is just amazing. Thanks for this collection!

You're welcome! Isn't the show just wonderful?
