Spoiler alert, she finds the ball

Breaking Muscle posted an article on the top ten foods to fight inflammation. I'll not be re-introducing beans (for a number of reasons), but most of these could stand to have better representation in my diet. I think I saw hemp seeds at Costco last time I was there. I've fought the smoothie/juicing trend for a long time because I really do think it's not always helpful to drink one's calories. But when I'm dealing with such massive amounts of inflammation, I can't help wondering if this might not be a bad avenue to explore, even if just temporarily. I did feel a bit better (and lost several inches of abdominal inflammation) when I was on the pureed-food SCD experiment. Hm.

On The Toast a couple days ago, there was a discussion about public bathroom etiquette, and a reader posted the comment that an employee she supervises used to hole up in the handicapped stall and write Star Trek fanfiction out loud. OH MY GOD why does this stuff never happen to me? No, no, I get the bathroom where the same person stinks it up every damn morning before 8:30am. I get the bathroom where the cleaning staff left vomit on the door of the second stall for four days before I finally called in a complaint. I get the bathroom where the accessible stall is constantly being used by (usually freshman or sophomore) women who use it to administer their morning prep including curling their hair, yes, despite the fact that they somehow made it to campus sans make-up and the whole room smells like shit because the same person stinks it up every damn morning before 8:30am. Some people get the equivalent of real-time Star Trek fan fiction podcasts and I get that. Typical.

I'm back at work today, but am wearing sunglasses at my desk because Jesus everything is so bright. Also, I have zero appetite which is not great because even though I have rock solid blood sugar stability, I need to eat eventually but man it's hard for me to force down food when I'm not feeling it.

To be honest, I'm considering leaving here early. I have two busy weekends in a row coming up (one of which includes my fall trip to Indianapolis and the other which includes a visit from [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's folks and my second visit to the Renaissance Festival), and then starting October 13, the other secretary is gone for two weeks which means no time off for me unless I am bleeding out my eyeballs or worse.

A friend of mine sent me this video, which is awesome and going in my eventual Tumblr collection, "Dogs."

Update: 11:58am Okay, yeah, making myself eat some lunch was a really bad idea.

I love this video. It's in my YouTube "favorites" because I can always count on it to make me smile. :)

I love how happy dogs are SO HAPPY.

Also, regarding the bathroom: Ew. I mean, everybody poops, but dang. That's just rude.

EVERY. MORNING.

We had a 3:30 every day pooper in our ladies' room :-( She left the company and was replaced by another one (REALLY??). Thankfully they're both gone and I can now go into the bathroom unafraid.

Though this week was the first time I've gone into the bathroom, triggering the auto-off lights to come on, only to find out there was someone camped in the dark. Odd.

Hope you got to leave early today.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, auto-off lights in a public restroom are an abomination. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE.

Edit: Not only did not get to leave early, but did not get to take a lunch. GOOD TIMES.

Could smoothies or juice maybe help you get calories easier? I remember you mentioning having low appetite before.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-01 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I very rarely have low appetite, but it does happen once in a while. Normally, though, I can out-eat just about everybody in the room. Which is why when I do have no appetite, it's freakish and scary. Today, though, I decided to eat when my stomach actually growled at me. Got about five bites in and my tum started to cramp in a very unpleasant way. Sooooo I think I might not try that again for a little while.

I might have been remembering when you started the SCD and were worried about eating enough calories?

Do you ever have the problem that eating can be tricky when you're too hungry? I've realized if I go past the "huh, feeling hungry" to "oh, stomach hurting eat NOW" I'll often end up with stomach cramps or something similar. This makes breakfast tough, as I don't naturally have an appetite until it's too late.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that definitely does happen (the too hungry to eat thing) when I have a low appetite. And then my eating disorder monster rears its head and it's all a big furniture-smashing party until things can regulate in my brain (and belly).

And yeah, I was worried about getting enough calories on the SCD, but that was ONLY pureed food (except for meat), and not supplementing with.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more the breakfast smoothie seems to make sense and I feel stupid for condemning it for so many years. =b

I'm not a big fan of drinking food but it can have it's time and place!

I think if you have smoothie options in addition to your other dietary options, rather than instead of, it could certainly help. And on the rare occasions when your stomach doesn't want to let you eat, having something to sip on may be gentler to your system.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-01 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking it might be an easy and gentle way to do breakfast. I'll just need to remember to make them before I go to bed in case [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick isn't awake before I leave for work.

so very happy we have a one stall, essentially private bathroom. Although, there was an incident where some kid (please god, let it have been a very young kid!) smeared nasty everywhere during a reception.

Oh, I feel you. We get the public restrooms where someone very carefully drapes the entire toilet in paper to sit upon, deposits their duty, and then LEAVES IT ALL -- WITHOUT FLUSHING!! WTF?!
Man, I don't even like doing my hair/makeup in the same area as my own partner's stink.. let alone stranger stank. Yuck.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-01 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)

FUCKING THIS. I just don't get it. I know the dorms have almost all converted to shared en suites. So it's not like they're all sharing nasty bathrooms anymore. Why are they doing their morning toilette IN WESCOE HALL?

[identity profile] seascribe.livejournal.com 2014-10-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my GOD that dog. That made my entire day.

I hope your appetite comes back. The juicing thing sounds like it could be worth a shot? Several people in my family--but none with chronic issues that sound anything like yours--have tried it and been fans of the results.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'll certainly report back, you can count on that!

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who can barely pee when someone else is in the room, I don't understand using the shared work bathroom for anything more than that (unless it's an emergency). And I could see doing hair/make up because something screwed up your morning, or you have to go somewhere after work, but not on a regular basis!

Of course, I refuse to leave the door open or use the toilet while my SO is in the bathroom (maybe I'll pee while he's showering if I really gotta go) because, for me, it's a line I do not cross. Bathroom time is private time.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty casual with peeing in front of people, but yeah, pooping is Sacred and Private. =D

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy, I like every single food on that anti-inflammatory list and am gonna start putting turmeric in my smoothies. I heard on NPR that turmeric fosters the growth of stem cells in the brain and I want my brain to be happy.

super cute video!!!

About the pooping. One year I had to be at work at 8:30 AM. Let me just say that I am a 2:00 - 10:00 sleep-cycle kind of person, and guess where I was when the urge came. It was fucking awful, also because I'm the teacher, so...yeah. A. Whole. Year. what a nightmare. :(

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-02 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Uuuuuuuuuuugh. That sucks for you.

Shoot me some of your fave smoothie recipes, if you would, please. I'm on the hunt, now!

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2014-10-04 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have recipes. I use what I have. The only thing I make a point of putting in is a frozen banana because it makes the drink kinda milk-shaky.

I also like using the almond milk that I make by hand...I actually do have a recipe for that since the ingredients don't depend on what I get at the CSA.

I also like to put in Hemp seed powder, sometimes a wellness herbal formula and sometimes ashwagandha powder.

Awhile ago I was thinking of developing recipes for smoothies, but I never got around to it, and at this point I'm just swamped.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-10-04 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the tips! Perhaps instead of recipes, suggestions on what flavors go well together--and what possible disasters have you blended up so I can learn from your mistakes? =D
