Scattershot

Something I forgot to mention in my earlier posts about Con*Strict was the vid show. I la-la-la-love fanvids, and this was my first con with a vid show. It's not surprising how group watching escalated the feels--just like watching a movie or a concert with a large, receptive audience intensifies the experience.

Here's one of the vids from the Con*Strict vid show, done by one of the attending members. It was my favorite for two reasons which are not difficult to determine.

More of my fave vids from the show:

A Hollow Crown fanvid! (embedding disabled)

I'm not even in the Stargate fandom--I've never seen a single episode--but this vid for Stargate Atlantis is great. Password "dumbest".

Yesterday I wore one of my re-fashioned outfits (a dress made from pieces of four tee shirts) with a pair of bloomers underneath (just long enough for the lace to peek out from under the dress). I felt like I was in my PJs all day. I'm looking forward to having more of those in my closet. Also looking forward to the practice (from making my own) so I can start making them to sell. I'm going to need to invest in a small mannequin for that, so if anyone local sees one for cheap, let me know. This is not as outrageous of a request as it seems--Lawrence has some unlikely thrift and dumpster finds.

Speaking of style, I avoid wearing gloves as a fashion statement because I think they're a little fussy (it's hard to actually do anything while wearing them). Fingerless gloves would solve a lot of the problem, but they've always seemed so...pretentious. These might change my mind. Fuck pretentious. Those are JEWELRY. I mean, Christ, just look at those things.

One of the reasons I've never considered becoming a yoga instructor is that the market is so glutted here in Lawrence. A conversation with [livejournal.com profile] ms_danson made me wonder about the possibility of doing a yoga podcast, though. I picture a website that has a basic dictionary of poses as well as individual pages on the site. Each page would have a list of images of the particular poses for whatever the focus of that page's series, and a link to listen or download a voice narration for the series. People could request a theme, goal, or focus for a series once a month or something. Doesn't that sound great? Now there's motivation to do a teacher training course. Someday. In my copious spare time with all my excess energy.

***
Energy levels are still shit, and the ridges in my fingernails are back. The index and middle fingernails have them now, too. The thumbnails look and feel like washboards. Ugh. So demoralizing. I see Dr. Jonah on Thursday and I'm going to talk about re-upping my mineral supplements that we started decreasing two months ago. I feel like earlier this summer my energy levels were better. I'm done with waking up tired. This regressing business is for the birds.

We shopped for phones last night. It was hellish. I think I'm going to wind up with a Galaxy S6. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick is price shopping because for what we want, it's cheaper to buy our own unlocked phones and get a month-to-month plan through T-Mobile (which is what some local friends did who are very happy with their service). I have to admit, these newfangled phones are awful pretty. And it will be nice to have a phone that doesn't randomly turn itself back on. Or refuse to disable the Mute function. But oh my goodness they're so difficult for me to use. Touch screens do not react well to my skin, and there's something about my electrical charge that makes things go a little nutty. When someone asks me to take a picture with their phone, it always turns off or goes to a different screen or something. Beyond that, though, there's my concern about having internet access 24/7. I'm honestly relieved that the Tumblr phone app is so bad because I see myself easily becoming That Person.

Tomorrow I am a panelist for the Kansas Women’s Leadership Institute conference. Last year I served as a panelist on a university-wide presentation for graduate-level support staff and was in the pilot group for KU's new online catalog software (a nine-month project). I need to remember to put this shit in my end-of-year review. I don't think anyone (including myself) realizes how much I actually do around here.

Which...I guess I should do something now to prepare for tomorrow's presentation.

*flails* Those fanvids are awesome! :D I love fanvids!

The Galaxy S6 is really pretty! I've thought about jumping to the Galaxy but the service on them in my area is crap.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Happy you liked the vids!

I think the S6 Edge is even prettier, but pretty's not enough to justify the extra cost to me. =/

Oh WOW, the Duran Duran/Fury Road fanvid knocked my socks off, and the others are excellent, too. What an awesome bit of con programming! Props to the people who curated so well, and thank you so much for bringing them home to share!

And speaking of sharing, those gloves are pretty amazing. Where do you FIND these gorgeous things??

I have a Samusung Galaxy (a couple of years old at this point) and I'm very fond of it--there's definitely a learning curve, but there are so many helpful shortcuts available online and certain apps that are real lifesavers (like Google Maps). I resisted getting a smartphone for many years, but I really like having one now that I do.

Best of luck panelling and yes, write that shit DOWN. Our annual reviews are coming up and I'm trying not to be sarcastic while also doing my best to remember the stuff that made my head explode this year.

Where do you FIND these gorgeous things??

I spend a lot of time on the internet. Here, Tumblr, Pinterest, Etsy, The Toast's Friday Open Thread, sometimes even FB!

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like a nice pair of gloves - those are wonderful.

Ha, best luck on the phone. I hope mine lasts forever - I dread having to get a new one!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm having an honest conversation with myself as to whether I would actually wear those gloves or not because if I think I will wear them, I'm asking for them for xmas. Just...I want them in gray.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW, those fanvids! I think I know the two reasons you love the Fury Road one ;-)

We got the Galaxy S6 Edge versions in "Platinum Gold"! T-Mobile claims to have awesome 4G coverage in our neighborhood. *fingers crossed*

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
SO JELLISH!!!
Where did you find and how much, if I might ask?

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I got 'em from eBay! Both are (slightly) used, so just a little more than half-price of new. T-Mobile has a special where you buy a plan, bring your own phone, and they send you a (free) SIM card and port your old number over, plus pay for any remaining plan you have at your old company.

I did a crap-ton of research, and found that the SM-G925T model ("T" is for T-Mobile) was our best bet. Lots of others will work with that company's frequencies, but only the T will work in places where 4G or LTE isn't available.

Oh, and one of them is the 64-gig model, so it could serve as a mega MP3 player, too...

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's really cool. Phones be like cars then, slightly used is way less than Brand Spankin New.
I know when I jumped boat from Working Assets/Credo, it HURT, but they just couldn't keep up with what I needed and fit my budget.
Right now, it's not worth doing any changing since LMH subsidizes Jbird's phone service to the point where mine is about the same as TMob offers, and he'll lose money if I do.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I know when I jumped boat from Working Assets/Credo, it HURT, but they just couldn't keep up with what I needed and fit my budget.

That's exactly what happened with us, too. sadness.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-27 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be a minor difference, affordable. It's insane now.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Good analogy - though even brand-new phones are way cheaper on eBay than through a phone company, like most things. Another reason I feel T-Mobile is awesome is that they're encouraging people to save money on their phones. This ought to eventually bring down the cost to something more reasonable - they're now more expensive than comparable laptops!

Yeah, we're also leaving CREDO for the same reasons. I've been a member since the 1990s. *sigh*

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-27 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Me, too. When I had Working Assets for landline service, I used to love telling the marketers "I have Working Assets" and they'd say, "Oh. I'll take you off our list. We know we are willing to pay more for that service."
Of course, back then, it actually was Better Service. It didn't go that way when they went wireless.. after at least several years of staying with them. Somewhere they switched to Sprint network and it SUCKED.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-22 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
More later when I can check the vids, I love love love my Galaxy, and I didn't think I'd ever love any phone better than my Droid.

ETA" Wild Boys. There are no words.
Those gloves remind me why I've kept my lifting gloves all these years, and why I loved to wear them about ..just because.
I'm sorry to hear about the nail ridges. That was such a great sign.

My next door neighbor gets half mannequin clothing displays and arts them up. I found out that they might work well to pin on clothing for selling. A quick search did find them for less than ten bucks for the ones you can pin clothing on with the hollow backs

Woooo! Good news about the mannequin thing! I'll keep an eye out. Also good news about how much you love your Galaxy.

Fingerless gloves are just SO BADASS.

[identity profile] seascribe.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr phone app is a total data suck, not even worth it. You know, to shore up that will power. Sorry to hear about the energy levels staying tanked. *hugs*

Tumblr phone app is a total data suck, not even worth it.

EXCELLENT.

Yeah, at least I see Dr. Jonah this afternoon and we can try to fix this shit asap.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
fun vids, especially the top one.

I LOOOVE hand-decorations of all sorts...rings, gloves, henna, etc. But I never wear any at all because I use 'em for work. Oh well.

Teaching yoga sounds like fun!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think being a yoga teacher would be amazing and so incredibly rewarding. But I'm not interested in fighting with the dozens and dozens of other local instructors. I swear you can't throw a rock in this burg without hitting a yoga studio.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
here, too. the podcast idea is good though. and people like me who want to do activities at home would enjoy that.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-23 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely something to chew on.

Off to my panel, now. TTFN!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-07-27 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
FWIW, you can't miss a coffee shop either, but we still seem to have new ones all the time. Remember, it's not yoga you are selling, but YOU, and your approach. I think it would go well for intelligent pragmatic people who want to study yoga and not hear whispy voices and total hippyish nonsense.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-07-27 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Good point. Well, it's something to think about, anyway. I just...I like not being self-employed. Let someone else worry about the benefits and taxes. You know?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2015-07-23 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yoga Downloads (http://www.yogadownload.com/about-yoga-download.aspx) has been around for a very long time -- not sure how long, but I know I used to pimp it as awesome back in LJ days so... at least ten years? They are paid subscription now, though, so there might be a market for a free service/podcast type service. Don't know because they've offered everything I want for so long, I've never checked for anything else. But, they could at least serve as one resource for seeing how other people do the narration, etc. whenever you get around to doing your own because they encompass a bunch of different teachers and styles AND have been around long enough to work out the bugs of presentation.

And if you get a new phone, there are a TON of yoga apps. Pocket Yoga (http://www.pocketyoga.com/Apps/PocketYoga) being the one we use because it's great. But, they also have a large base dictionary of poses with detailed [written] descriptions of how to do them, the benefits of each pose, etc.

So: resources for you!

I look at those gloves and immediately my palms get sweaty!

I use ConcenTrace (http://www.traceminerals.com/products/liquid-tablet-minerals/concentrace-ionic-minerals) mineral supplement and I don't know if it's placebo or not but I totally feel different when I don't take it. I swear I get low potassium headaches. I forgot to bring it on our current [month-long] vacation and had a headache by the third day -- which, in fairness, could have been my MIL! :) But, we went out right away and got some.

Editing to add: I'm editing to give a shout out to Fitness Blender (https://www.fitnessblender.com/) in case you aren't familiar with them. I always think EVERYONE is familiar with them because they have a huge following, but maybe not? Anyway, all their videos are free and they have a selection of yoga/stretching. I don't use them for yoga so can't say how they are, but there they are! Aside from yoga, they are a great at-home workout resource because they have many many types of workouts. They are free or you can pay for a "program" which is their workouts curated into a X-long program for you. Jet and I have been doing the 4-week low impact one while we are travelling.

Editting again to add: egad to the gazillion edits to fix links and general typing/communicating fail!
