Despite our estrangement, I’m your man

For those of you wanting more takes on Crimson Peak, may I offer two favorable and lovely reviews, one is from local horror notable [livejournal.com profile] orrin and the other is from [livejournal.com profile] beren_writes.

And here's something for all my friends who I know want another Joss Whedon smackdown critique.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick bravely listened to Act 2 of Hamilton with me last night. About a third of the way through he asked "is this just a continuing trainwreck until the end?" and I said yeah, pretty much but he kept listening and agreed that even though it's sad it's also very very good.

I'm not going to say I looked up if orchestra pit seats are still available during our Spring Break but orchestra pit seats are totally still available during our Spring Break. Not cheap. BUT AVAILABLE.

Can we talk for a moment ([livejournal.com profile] curieuse, I'm looking at you) about the stylistic differences between King George's song (click the play option at the top) and the rest of the score and how that corresponds to the completely-different-from-everything-else tone of King Herod's song in Jesus Christ Superstar and how might that be intentionally referential? I hope so. I know LMM is a huge musical theater nerd I really want this not to be coincidence.

ETA: found on the toast, this Hamilton analysis/review from Talib Kweli.

Might be a great excuse to visit New York, eh? I could maybe work it into a business trip by setting up meetings with agents and editors and stuff....

Drake told me the other day that he wants to see Crimson Peak. That really surprised me - usually he's not much for scary things. I knew Raven would want to see it, but Drake? O_o

There were parts that were scary, but I agree with everyone else (including del Toro himself) that it really wasn't a horror movie.

Thanks for the reviews, I especially agreed with the end of the first one ( wanting it to be more plot-wise).

And the Joss critique was great.

You are so right re: style. I have a feeling it's staged in a really solitary way too compared to all the group songs. I want to hear absolutely everything about this trip. OMG. <3 So excited for you. It's also super Brit-poppy on tone and the first one even starts with a pretty clear Beatles lick. There is just so much going on, so many fun and beautiful layers to unroll. And you're going to SEE IT! <3 <3 <3

100% yes on the Brit-pop sound of his songs! Yes!

I AM SO EXCITED!

I am so annoyed by people who think King George's song is supposed to sound like The Beatles. No. It doesn't. The Monkees, sure, there's a whole musical phrases that sounds nearly lifted wholesale from Daydream Believer. Like, the manufactured pop of that era that was intended to cash in on The Beatles' popularity, yes, totally!

But The Beatles? Nah.

(I am Very Opinionated about this.)

I agree with you it doesn't sound Beatles-esque at all, but there is some person-in-authority somewhere who reports that Lin told him the musical intro to the song has a Beatles lick. Or something. But yeah, I sure don't hear it in the song. As you say, it's much more The Monkees or Herman's Hermits.
