Domesticity

I managed to avoid the siren call last year, but this year? I think this year I shall bow to my desires and make a new dance costume for Smoker. This means I'll have to cut off my fingernails, which is nothing short of tragic. Because, observe:

fingernails

Those are some great fingernails, and of course none show any indication of breaking or peeling anytime soon. However, they make hand sewing nearly impossible, so off they go. Oh, the sacrifices I make for art.

It's raining today, which is fantastic and amazing. The walk up to work was cloudy and cool and nearly a pleasure. Such a nice change! Also happening today is the visit with my PCP to discuss getting on Modafinil to combat my near-constant fatigue. I am hopeful and nervous. Please don't shoot me down on this one, Dr. Burt!

I'm planning meals for weekend visitors and oh my goodness I don't know if our refrigerator has room for meals for four people for two and a half days (eight meals). Vegetables take up a lot of room. It's going to be like playing Tetris to get everything packed in there so I don't have to make a second grocery-store run on Saturday morning.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick and I rely on leftovers for lunches and breakfasts, but I can't bring myself to feed reheated leftovers to guests. They are going to have to heat up their own breakfast casserole tomorrow morning because I'm coming to work for part of the morning, but I'm making the casserole tonight so at least it will be new. Even if reheated.

Of course, I'm sure the guests wouldn't mind at all eating leftovers, but it would bother me a lot to serve them. So. Eight meals! And now I am hungry. I didn't bother with breakfast this morning, and am regretting it.

How do you type with them? I always have problems when my nails get long.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I just...type? They don't bother me. I mostly just type with the nails themselves. Which is kind of loud, I guess, but I don't have to share a workspace with anybody.

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem. When they get too long I start getting #s instead of the top line of alpha characters on the keyboard.

Trade ya. I've started biting my pinkie nails again--an old stress habit that has resurrected after almost 15 years. I'm back to my Nailtique polish in hopes I can get them healthy again.

Can't wait to see the new costume. If you get it done soon maybe the nails will grow out in time for faire :-)

That's the plan! =D

And stop with the nailbiting, lady! Stop it right now! *shakes finger at you menacingly*

GOOD GOD woman, you are a nail FREAK!!

just think, with short nails you can pretend to be a lesbian or a guitar player, as well as do sewing. it's a situation that is made of win.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
you are a nail FREAK!!

I know. I'm kind of obsessive about them. Even when they're short, I keep them super well-kept and nearly always painted. I don't even try to grow them out any more. They just do their thing, and eventually one breaks, so I cut them all off and start over.

They grow pretty slowly, though. I last cut them off in early June. So it's taken them nearly two months to go from even with the top of my fingers to this length--about a quarter inch of growth.

[identity profile] e4q.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
mine break these days, so i tend to keep them short. time was i used to wear nail varnish a lot, as well, but i find my motivation is lax... where will it end? well, we already know the answer to that, it ends with me letting my leg hair grow in like thorns even when i know i have a hot date. it's shaming.

Ha ha ha ha ha!

I'd recommend the product I use for nail strength (Nailtiques, Formula 2), but I have no idea if it's available in the UK.

it's probably not even LEGAL here, judging by the superhero skillz of your nails.

You need to have Chris haul one of the little spare fridges down from campus :) (don't hit me)

I wish my pinky nails curved down like yours, mine grow straight out so they end up sort of going upwards.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG that is such a good idea. Seriously! Thank you!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)

Well, I can hardly believe you didn't already think of it!
You must be overwhelmed at the moment.

I totally LOVE having a spare little fridge, 'specially for entertaining.
You can put it out on the deck and it will be fine.. although in the 100+ heat, ours has had a rough time getting below 45 out there. Still good for beverages tho' and food can go in the main fridge.

We rarely keep the one in the kitchen plugged in (it makes a very light but persistent rattle that can get annoying). So I often forget it's more than just extra cabinet space. =D

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Da bird sez that little rattle could just be a dirty fan blade making the condensor fan off-balance (vacuum out behind the back panel) or it may just be off balance on one corner, needing an adjustment to the feet, if they don't all contact the floor equally, it'll vibrate. A lil pad under one that's not quite on the floor will stop that rattle. See if it stops if you move the fridge about a bit first to find out if that's the case.

Oooh, Thanks! I'll pass that info to [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick.

I can't sew without nails! Especially on my thumb, if I cut it short I feel like I'm missing a joint :).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Goes to show, different strokes...

[identity profile] grnvixen.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Guitar or banjo is out of course :).

And love Nailtiques! Made all the difference in finally getting mine to grow without splitting. Handling fabric (not to mention health issues) really dries them out.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Odd. I've never found my long nails get in the way of sewing. I even used them extensively in metal working. They came in handy with lapidary. I'd rather have my nails a millimetre from a diamond polisher than my finger skin....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You and [livejournal.com profile] grnvixen should form a club. =D

I'd imagine your guests would be happy for whatever food you served up. Besides, some dishes taste even better as leftovers compared to when the food was first cooked.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure they'd be peachy with it. I just have very conservative (read: Southern) notions about feeding guests. =D
