This sums up how I felt about the His Dark Material series. Thumbs down. Thumbs way fucking down.
And in the thumbs way fucking up category, I present to you one of the most amazing slashfic stories I've ever read. I got home from work yesterday feeling pretty low. So I pulled out my three current Comforts: Wine, Hookah, and Porn. Gotta say, I was particularly pleased with the results of the last one. All you ladies who said "Recs? Yes, please!" I hope this meets your approval.
Before I link to it, I need to be very clear about what I liked about it. The story basically a how-to manual on negotiating a consensual rape scene. With a bonus of some really hot gay sex. This might not be your kink, so proceed/read with caution. What I loved about the story was the author's obvious experience in a BDSM relationship herself (I assume all slashfic writers are female until told otherwise--sue me), and her meticulous detail to every single aspect of planning such a thing so that everybody gets good stuff out of it. Everyone might not get everything they want out of it, because it's all about communication and compromise. But at the end of the scene, everybody feels good. Tired and sore, yeah, but good. And the hot gay sex is really goddamned fucking hot, wow. Yes, of course it's due South-based because that is all I am reading right now. But don't get me wrong--if someone wants to pitch me some good Star Trek reboot or Sherlock Holmes movie slash, I won't turn those down.
