Diet Pill

The iPod migration continues. I think I got the settings right this time. *crossing fingers* I had a moment of amusement this morning when I ripped in succession two very different CDs: Krishna Das Greatest Hits of the Kali Durga followed by L7's Bricks are Heavy. Man, I love this eclectic music collection.

If anyone has topic requests for my essays at the Feminist Fitness blog, please let me know. My posts so far: Doing it for ourselves, the importance of one's reasons for change, and how to acknowledge the support (or lack of support) in a partner, Your body, your science experiment, kind of an intro post about me and how I think/act, and Punishment and reward, about my obessive-compulsive eating issues. I also have some video posts and reblogs sprinkled in there, but I'm not gonna bother linking to those. Seriously, though, send me topic ideas. I'm supposed to write one a week, and that's a lot of topics to think up.

I submitted to the blog a great fitness website, too, Nerd Fitness. His post on fitness enthusiasts as mutants was excellent.

Speaking of your body, your science experiment, I tested my theory that my body can't deal with dried fruit anymore. After a couple weeks of crazy swelling after every meal, I finally had things (mostly) under control thanks to some strict eating and two abdomen-focused acupuncture sessions. Then I ate a bunch of dried fruit and nuts. Next day, boom, back to crazy swelling after every meal. It's been three or four days and I'm still having issues. So, yeah. Pretty obvious positive result, there. Dried fruit is off the menu, except in very small amounts (like a quarter cup of cranberries in an entire batch of my carrot salad). With that in mind: anyone local want a Costco-sized half-bag of dried apricots?

My kids would devour those apricots.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
They're yours. I'll be in your neighborhood this evening, a bit before 7pm. Shall I drop them off?

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup--you can just leave them on the porch if we aren't home.

Also, we are about to head to the East Lawrence Rec Center with a trip downtown, so we can pass by your house on the way home if you want to pop them in your mailbox.

If you do want to leave them out for me to pick up, just reply here or send me an e-mail. I'll have my phone on me to check it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll go ahead and put them in the mailbox right now, just in case I might forget to bring them tonight. I'd have you come to the door, but [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick is still asleep.

I love eclectic music collections too. If nothing else for sheer contrast.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*fistbump*

Everything from Abba to ZZ Top, baby. <3

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice! No Aaron Neville?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It shames me to admit that my appreciation of Soul/R&B music is...minimal. *sadface* I just don't care for it. Alas.

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, he's not a favorite of mine (my list currently starts with... Adam Lambert... then Adele... ) because his high ad lib voice reminds me of Beaker somehow... I love you baby bay-bee meep meep!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, see, I really really really want to like Adam Lambert, but the stuff I've checked out on YouTube just leaves me kinda meh. His cover of "Fever" is just so good, though! There's got to be more like that out there. What album do you recommend?

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually only have one song of his in my iTunes at the moment, kind of a slow moany one called "I Just Love You" I downloaded on a whim -- I liked his covers from his AI days the most.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I'm best off sticking with his covers until he's older. Because his original stuff...well, it's just...those lyrics. Waaaay too teen-angst-emo coupled with painfully forced life-is-good stuff. And this is coming from someone who likes Ke$ha for godssake.

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally hear you. For sheer contrast (to cleanse the palate at least), here's some Christine Lavin that is making me smile this morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_6XMqcEqiI

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

I will work on topic requests for you.

Dried fruit makes me blow up like a hot air balloon. I am a flash explosion hazard for the next twelve hours, and should be kept away from spark and flame.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Pretty much. Not cool.

Topic requests will be much appreciated!

[identity profile] shrijani.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got to thinking that I would like a more detailed understanding of your experimental methods and processes, and how you arrived at them. You've been up to this for a while, and I would guess that you pay attention to certain things, or use certain time intervals, to arrive at your conclusions. There are probably some folk out there (like me) who might be struggling in their effort to understand the results of a body experiment, unless they are pretty extreme. Maybe a good idea? I would sure like to read it.

Ooo! Very good idea. I'll work on that. Thanks!

I am totally dealing with eating & fitness issues right now. Clicked the blog...bookmarked it. I will probably have topic ideas, but right now am so new I don't even know what I think about soymilk. ok, that made no sense. LOL!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha ha! Well, I know what I think about soymilk...

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
bust it out, woman. what do YOU think about it?

here's my little issue. i'm not actually against regular MILK. but i AM against factory farming. My local organic family farm has bit the dust. Concurrently, my doctor wonders if it might help my breathing to reduce milk intake.

but soymilk doesn't taste "natural". it tastes like a concoction, and if i want to get healthy, how does drinking a swill of chemicals help that?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, anything that has to be so heavily processed before it's made nutritionally available for human consumption should probably just, you know, not be consumed by humans.

Dude, I started following Feminist Fitness this week. I, sadly, don't have any topic ideas(though I'll ponder on it) but I look forward to your posts!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! Thanks!

[identity profile] anomali.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Chernobylred and Shrijani,

Have either of you ever looked into fructose malabsorption/intolerance?

Many of the people I have known with irritable bowel or other chronic intestinal problems seem to have a rough time with bloating, gas, or even nausea and diarrhea when it comes eating dried fruit, fruit juices, inulin (chicory root used for fiber supplementation)or even just too much or certain types of fresh/frozen/canned fruit at a sitting. As a rule, if HFCS causes someone tummy trouble, any of these can potentially do the same.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha!

I remember the great apple problem back when...? That led you to get the breath test... I'm glad you brought that up anomali, because I needed to remember what fruits/veggies set me off as well.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I have looked into that, and I know Roya has suspected she has it. But I don't experience issues with fresh fruit and the problem vegetables. The only fruit my body really doesn't like is raw apples, but they're okay if I cook them.

[identity profile] anomali.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I wonder what it is about dried fruit, then? Sulfides, perhaps?

So often, it seems as though health is rather like a puzzle that takes a long time and a lot of trial and error to make whole. And then, just when you think you can sit back and admire the picture you've created, your cat comes along, knocks it off the table, and you have to try to piece it back together again.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might be the combo of sugar and sulfides, yes.

Love your metaphor. =)
