Shake it

My acupuncturist has a stomach flu so my appointment is postponed until Saturday morning. I slept very little due to thunderstorms in the wee hours. I'm incredibly swollen and lumpy today. BLAH.

We watched Drive last night. It was well-acted and beautifully filmed (oh my goodness the color and arrangements of some of those shots), and I'm certainly not going to turn down nearly two hours of looking at Ryan Gosling, but what is the big deal over this movie? It was...not really that awesome as a movie, story-wise and in regards to character development. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick summed it up perfectly when he said "This is what happens when mainstream literature tries to be a gangster movie."

On a happier note, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you The men's diving team of Great Britain.

I find Drive to be a perfect movie because it is exactly what it's trying to be - it's not about change/character development, it's about stagnation despite constant (literal) motion. It's about being trapped in the same cycle again and again because you make the same choices even when you try not to. That was the point, not change, not a beginning and and ending. The end WAS the beginning, like some infinite loop. It's more of a poem than a story.

Also, the elevator scene.

Ahhhhhh! Thank you! Wow, I wish I'd had that little bit of insight going into it. That makes a huge difference. I'm kind of crap at recognizing metaphors.

Yeah. Elevator scene. Mmmmm.

I think catching metaphors is sometimes alchemy as much as it is skill or training. I swear I'll watch something a dozen times, and then on the dozen-and-first suddenly something will hit me that seems like it should have been crazy obvious all along.

I had a similar reaction to Drive. I thought it was admirably done, but wasn't really sure what the big deal was. (I like Tessa's take on it above, though, and I'll admit it hadn't occurred to me, either.)

That is exactly how the Brit dances.

Lucky you!
