For what it's worth, it's a small tag on the underside of the wide end (If I recall correctly), and on the underside of the narrow end is another small tag that says "or knot!"

As my 50s and early 60s ties will attest! Modern ties are just too wide for me. I don't like the way they look on my chest, so I go for the vintage skinny ones.
