Stiff with a side order of sleepless

Seen on Tumblr:
"A woman from the audience asks: ‘Why were there so few women among the Beat writers?’
and [Gregory] Corso, suddenly utterly serious, leans forward and says:
“There were women, they were there, I knew them,
their families put them in institutions, they were given electric shock.
In the ’50s if you were male you could be a rebel,
but if you were female your families had you locked up."

Stephen Scobie, on the Naropa Institute’s 1994 tribute to Allen Ginsberg

Absences of women in history don’t “just happen,” they are made.

PREACH.

I went to Restorative Yoga last night and it kind of kicked my ass. It was good, but wow. Lots of unsupported legs-in-the-air stuff. My hip is extra warm today. No shooting aches or pains, thankfully, but it's stiff and unhappy. I'm walking pretty slow, and getting up the hill was not terribly pleasant. But I did my yoga this morning, and have achieved significant improvement during the hip-opening sequence (for those of you who might want to try it yourselves, here is Parts One and Two).

Last night I had problems falling asleep again. I have no idea what's up with that. It's frustrating. I think I'm going to try adding a Kavinace capsule to my dinnertime supplements for a couple weeks to see if that helps get me back in the falling-asleep groove. I haven't had problems falling asleep in years. It's always been the staying asleep that's plagued me. But other than my occasional rounds of insomnia, I'm usually a hit-the-pillow-lights-out type. So. Another puzzle to solve. Hurray.

I'm relieved that dance class is canceled tonight. My hip and I need some time to chill.

My creative writing mentor in university used to be friends with a woman in his youth around that time. Her parents had her lobotomized because she was sexually promiscuous.

Oh my god. That's...well. There's no words for it, really, are there?

Yeah. My prof still shook with rage when he told me about it, decades later.

This is one of the reasons I can't get on board with retro shows like Mad Men. That's great that they're trying to be subversive (or so some claim--I remain unconvinced). But they're still glamorizing a period that was horrible for a lot of people, and glossing over so much of the crap. I know (I know! I know!) that a show/movie/whatever can't deal with Every Single Problem, but I personally just can't enjoy the (admittedly) gorgeous sets and costumes in this particular instance.

I've never seen it, so don't know anything about it, really.

Count yourself fortunate.

That hip-opening series looks like it'd kick my butt, which probably means I should DO IT. Hrm.

When I started it four weeks ago, I couldn't even lean forward in the first pose. Now I can touch my hands to the floor on either side of my knee! And the top knee is a lot closer to the bottom foot, now. Closer by probably two or three inches. It's gratifying to see such fast progress. I hold each side for at least ten breaths, and I do the sequence at least four times a week. It's very effective!

Now that I've found out I'm getting unemployment, I may go for the unlimited yoga card. Hope they get it to me SOON. I keep forgetting what night that class is.

New commenter here, I've been casually reading your LJ for years though the bellydance LJ group.

I did a bunch of research and writing about the women Beat writers when I was in college (personal favs: Lenore Kandel, Anne Waldman). The way some of these women were treated, the crap they put up with, makes me furious. The ways they found to persevere and practice their arts are inspiring, as is the increasing recognition of their contributions. I've seen that grow immensely since I was in school.

Wow! So great to meet you. Thanks for commenting.

I'm glad to hear that they're getting more recognition now. I hope some of them are still alive to know about it.
