What the fuck is going on in Turkey? Has anyone else heard about it? This is awful. Jesus, their Prime Minister sounds like a horrible person.

"The police were there yesterday, they are there today, and they will be there tomorrow. Taksim Square cannot be allowed to be a place where marginal groups can freely roam," he said in a televised speech.

MARGINAL GROUPS. In other words, groups who disagree with the increasingly religious and conservative direction of the government.

Ugh. Horrifying. Enraging.

The thing with Turkey is that the army is secular and if the government tries to overreach with the religious stuff they'll just shoot the prime minister.

That's...comforting?

I'll have to contact my cousin who lives in Ankara and see what she has about it. (So glad Roz is back from there now).
Add:
She awoke to banging of pots and pans and the protests near her were against newly enacted restrictions on the sale of alcohol, banning it from 10pm to 6am, so people gathered in the park to drink in protest. She says it's safe to go out, no worries for her and family, and that her DVR streaming was blocked and showed a kids show about a penguin, but social media is putting out news breaks.
Suggest searching "OccupyGezi" to get news rather than what's being shown in Turkey

That's what I've found for now.

Thanks for the firsthand account!

It seems things have calmed down, thankfully. (http://www.economist.com/blogs/charlemagne/2013/06/turkish-politics) I'll keep sharing what I get from her and her husband on FB. Unfortunately, most of it is in Turkish, and Google Translate sucks at Turkish.

holy crap! I hadn't heard any of this. Admittedly, I've been off the grid, but jeez.
