Dig through the ditches

KU is apparently the best college to work for. This makes me wonder Sweet Bleeding Jesus, how horrible is it at other places? Don't get me wrong, I like what I do and I feel valued at my job, but it is not thanks to the general atmosphere here. Which, frankly, sucks, thanks to current trends to make the university more like a business and the push for commercialization, consolidation, and profit profit profit.

In costuming news, I've found a couple tutorials on how to make a fake stitched scar that use things like tissue paper and Elmer's glue. I'm going to play around with that tonight. None of them are re-useable, but if it looks good, I'll just build it once for Dead Girl on Saturday and wear Pit Girl Friday and Sunday. That might be the best arrangement, anyway, since Dead Girl will probably be the more comfortable outfit since (frankly) there isn't a lot to her. Just a bra, tap pants, and a very loose-fitting dress. She's also got the more complicated makeup job in general (because it includes full body makeup), so just doing her once will be less time-consuming.

After yesterday's session with Andrew, I was feeling pretty good. I even mentioned how I wasn't sure if it was an easy day or if I was just getting used to this. Of course this morning? My glutes are killing me holy fucking shit. Serious, serious DOMS in my ass--the deeper, underlying muscles beneath the gluteus maximus. HELLO THAR, NEWLY FOUND MUSCLE FRIENDS.

During the session, Andrew had me roll out the outside of my hip--specifically the tensor fasciae latae--in our continuing quest to deepen my squat. In the video, the instructor uses a lacrosse ball. We used a rolling tool made from two PVC pipe caps duct-taped together. HARD. CORE. I have visible bruising on the sides of my hips, now, to match the bruises on my thighs from our Rumble Roller. One more thing to add to the mobility checklist! Three times a week I roll out my feet, ankles (inside and outside), calves, hamstrings, quads, IT bands, adductors, glutes, and now, tensor fasciae latae. I spend at least two minutes on each area. Yes, it takes a while. Yes, it's worth it.

The Rob Zombie show is a week away.

Yay! All of it.. YAY!

(other than the college survey, which sounds like BS to me, or Otherwise Known As "Great to work for if I get to keep my job".)

Seriously.

I've recently noticed that the muscles one uses for deadlifts, jump squats, and sitting on the toilet are pretty much the same. Fun times.

AH HA HA HA HA HA JUMP SQUATS OH MY FUCKING GOD I HATE THOSE.

Also, yes. You speak truth.

This LJ icon KILLS me in this context!

How does one roll out the ankles?

(I occasionally use a baseball or golf ball on my feet, but need to do it more... i have a 6" diameter hard foam cylinder for my back/legs/etc)

This video (http://www.mobilitywod.com/2013/03/ankle-positional-fault-fix-jill-miller-style/) shows how to roll out the outside of your ankle. Since I don't have their fancy-pants ball, I use a lacrosse ball and just don't push as hard. For the inside of the ankles, sit with one leg crossed in front of you, either in a chair or on the floor (I think it's easier on the floor, but if you're not flexible enough, a chair works). Then simply press/roll the ball all over the inside of that leg. You might be surprised at how far up the tension goes. I have lines of white hot pain that go from just behind my ankle to nearly halfway to my knee. Be careful to avoid the bone, obviously. You're pretty body-aware, I think, so I hope you won't have problems figuring out what's bone and what's hardened fascia.

Happy rolling!

OMG I did that last night, after reading your post. Yeesh. Managed the bottoms of my feet (because I've been doing that for awhile now), but this is the first time in way too long that I did anything else. Awkward. Uncomfortable. Good.

Need to seek out more videos, so I can check on various ways to manage these contortions. Outsides of my thighs (IT band) were too painful to roll on, so I ended up just rolling the tennis ball there, all manual-like. The dogs thought it was totally unfair that I wouldn't share with them.

Hurray for self-care!

This morning I thought about making a video of my entire rolling-out procedure for anyone who might need some visual help with what to do. I wonder 1) when I could make time for that, and 2) whom I could beg for help with video editing.

Of course, you know, should you want...I'd be more than happy to meet with you sometime to show you in person! That would be a brilliant excuse to get together.

That sounds like excellently painful fun. :) I'll have my people email your people. Ha. (this is extra-funny, given your more recent post about FB folks wanting to get together)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but see, I've been actively wanting more of a relationship with you. It's just that our schedules rarely align.

I have video-editing software that's really easy to use. We just need to set you up with a Google AdSense Account so you can monetize your sure-to-go-viral vids ;-)

You inspired me to roll out for almost an hour last night before going to bed, and it was GREAT. Found a hard, crunchy spot behind my right knee, but only discovered that by having first rolled out my neck, back, shoulders, glutes, hips, hamstrings, and calves. On the way back up the third or fourth time, the hams were loose enough that I found a white-hot spot back there. Hm.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome! Good for you!

I still find it weird that college and university are synonymous in the US.

Glute DOMS are the funniest DOMS.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, kind of. Technically, a college is a conglomeration of departments inside the university. So we have the College of Liberal Arts inside the University of Kansas. But "college" can also mean a four-year degree school that doesn't have graduate programs.

Language is weird.

What are the differences in Canada?

Glute DOMS are the funniest DOMS.

I did my resistance work this morning just to get rid of the damn things. Or at least alleviate them a bit. They do feel better now.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
My understanding is universities are where you get degrees and education, and colleges are where you get certificates and job-specific training. For example, I got my BA at the University of New Brunswick (Classics/English major, and Fine Arts minor), and I studied jewellery/metal arts at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. There's crossover, for sure, but if you want a trade, you go to college, and if you want a degree, you go to university.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Got it. That's a nice division. The US has a horrible tendency to belittle trade schools. It's a shame.

So many people would benefit from a trade school, but it's rarely mentioned in high schools except to the kids already taking shop classes. God knows I'd have done much better in a trade school than I did at the university, but in the 80s there wasn't anybody suggesting such things to (gasp) girls.

Mad jelly you're going to see Rob Zombie!

SO! EXCITED!
