It's my favorite Stephen King novel, but I don't want it to be my life

Woke at 1:20 this morning. Read for a while and then tried to sleep again around 4:30. I dozed in fits of about twenty minutes at a time until I gave even that up at 6:30. What with the near-fasting state and the lack of sleep (I've had only one night of six consecutive hours of sleep in a week) I'm starting to feel kind of loopy.

A while ago I made a decision to stop blaming my body for things and not to think of it as my enemy. That's getting a bit more difficult with every passing wakeful night.

Maybe I do need to consider having a sleep study done. I'm seeing my PCP in early December for a whole bunch of stuff (including talking to her about how to work around the business with getting labs done). I'm adding this to the list.

I want to squee about Insomnia, because I love that book so much too (King is my favorite), but I am not liking this insomnia and lack of appetite you are dealing with. Insomnia on its own is fucking awful, but to have the other shit thrown in just makes it even more shitty. Can I swear any more here? Sorry...

I suffer through bouts myself and I never take anything, so I have no tips for it. Friends tell me to take everything from nighttime cold drugs or other medicinal sleep aids to valerian and melatonin. I'm not a fan of OTC medicine other than ibuprofen, but I haven't tried the natural stuff yet. Have you?

I'm glad you have an upcoming appt with your PCP so that you can get this addressed with the rest of your list. I wish I could give you a die-hard remedy so that you can at least get some more sleep in the meantime.

Eeeeeeeeeeee so happy someone else has read that one and loves it as much as I do. It's just such a good story. I don't have many favorites of things, but Insomnia is most definitely my favorite of his.

I had good luck with the herbal tincture I was taking to help even out my progesterone, but I'm wondering if I need to get my progesterone tested again because obviously something is wrong. Except OH WAIT insurance won't cover my naturopath's requests for blood work anymore.

Maybe I'll try increasing my dose of the progesterone tincture for a few days. See if that helps.

It's been a long time since my last reread and I think you just inspired me to pick it up again. Gah, so good.

Where did you get that tincture?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-11-27 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
From my naturopath. He mixes it for me.

I think it's time I find one here then, especially since my awesome PCP just left the practice and his replacement- whom, to be fair, I haven't yet met- sort of makes me nervous just reading his profile.

I hope you're able to eat your roast chicken and potatoes today.

:)
I swear that micronized progesterone has saved my sleep. Yes, yes, give more tincture a try!

I just bought a fitbit in the hope that it might help me record what flavour of awful my sleep difficulties are.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-11-27 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting! Do you know how it works? How does it tell what level of sleep you're in?

I haven't figured it all out yet. It was an impulse buy from Draco this weekend. I'll report on it when I see how well it works.

I have a fitbit (bought for myself for my birthday) and I use it just as much for sleep analysis as for activity. Mine is a "flex" model and it will record, based on movement rate I think, how long it takes me to get to sleep, how long I'm sleeping, how many times I'm restless, etc. It's been very useful data for me, since sleep is one of the Big Factors in me not getting sick or injured.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-11-27 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I'm not sure how well that sort of thing would work for me since I don't move hardly at all when I'm sleeping.

[identity profile] saffronhare.livejournal.com 2014-11-28 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's how it knows you're asleep. If you'd like, you can borrow mine for a couple of weeks and see what you think. The Flex model was around $99.

Ooooo! Wow, that's a very generous offer. I might take you up on that, hon! Thanks! Let's work out a time to hand off and hang out. Yes/yes?

I've probably had 5 sleep studies done because I have severe sleep apnea. During one, the tech got extremely bitchy because I woke up in the night and had a hard time getting back to sleep. I wanted to say some pretty brutal things to her... and she made it much harder to fall asleep again. If insomnia is the problem, a sleep study might not be the test you want.

Didn’t she used to be a professional wrestler? Man, it is SO frustrating when I can ALMOST place someone’s face.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-11-28 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's Kate Mulgrew. She was Capt. Janeway on ST: Voyager.

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2014-11-28 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ah.

Ah, ah, ahhhh... Right. Got it.

Thought it was “Lita” from the WWE. This is what I get for being a half-decent Star Trek geek (no Voyager or Enterprise) and a retired wrestling geek.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-11-28 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
From the little I know of the actor, I think she would be stoked to know you thought she was a wrestler.

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2014-11-28 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
that stinks about the inability to sleep, but I'm glad you have an existing appointment to tack it on to.
