Shiver me...somethings

Went to bed last night at 9:15 p.m., skipped my exercise this morning and didn't get out of bed until 6:45 a.m. (alarm was set for 6:30). Extra zinc, vitamin C, and sleep, and I feel fine today. No headache, no scratchy throat. No aches. Coulda been allergies, coulda been a cold, but either way, they're gone today and I'm very relieved.

Is anyone else I know going to purchase Freakangels Vol. 1? I love the art, but the storyline doesn't grab me. It's ok enough that I'm enjoying reading it online, but it's not enough for me to shell out the money. Which is too bad because Paul Duffield's art really turns me on. *sigh*

Speaking of getting turned on:

Goddamn but I love that photograph.

I want to go out dancing (I'm not sure if I'll make it to the Guy show in a couple weeks, but I'll try). I want to play naughty dress up and watch experts beat the hell out of willing subjects. I want to let my hands loose onto someone in a hard way. ... Ok, moving on.

Has anyone used Astral Sea's lotion bars? I've used a soy lotion bar made in Kansas (SoyPete) for several years now, but it would be nice to support a KCRF vendor. It would also be nice not to pay for shipping. It would be nice to have them not forget two of my items. And then not give me the bulk discount rate.

Anyway.

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've tried Astral Sea's lotion bar. Thanks.

What's up with this crazy weather? Highs in the 70s tomorrow? I'm going to freeze off what's left of my tits. Speaking of which, I need a new, more accurate tits icon--any photographer volunteers for that? Looks in the direction of [livejournal.com profile] funky_peacenik. Wish I'd gotten an earlier start on the cooler weather dance outfits because one week isn't enough to acclimate. Brrr.

Duffield's art is OK; he drew something in today's chapter which looked like the monsters from that one plastic surgery ep of The Twilight Zone, and it was supposed to be that girl with the blonde dreads. Scary. He's somewhat better than when he started; I think he main problem is drawing stuff which doesn't interest him. He does fine with steampunk tech and girls in corsets; past that, he shortcuts a lot.

I like the story, but it's been slow. I'll probably buy the hardcopy version next time I'm in the USA.

I think what I like about it is that everyone isn't all perfectly pretty. And the lines are sharp and clean. Overemphasis on cramped detail has its place (see Geof Darrow's work in Hardboiled (http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Boiled-Frank-Miller/dp/1878574582/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220628772&sr=8-1), which I love), but I'm liking the wide-open feeling of Duffield's style on this so far.

The FreakAngels plot is right up my alley, and I do love the art. I'll probably pick up the TPB sooner or later, but I'll definitely be ordering a copy as a Christmas present for the cousin who loved the Transmetropolitan graphic novels I gave her last year.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Transmetropolitan was fab. Much more to my liking as far as plot and characters.

I've been trying to read it, but I just have not been keeping up. I haven't analyzed why. I'm blaming it on information overload. My RSS feeds are getting voluminous.

Well, the story isn't exactly gripping, IMO. And you have to page through numerous screens to get any development. That's one of the reasons I'm so impressed with the Foglio's Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/). They manage to pack a hell of a lot of plot progress into one page of a screen spread.

Freakangel is cool as shit. Thanks for the hookup!

You're welcome! I love me a good comic book story.

f you like serialized online comics, you might also look up Wapsi Square (http://www.wapsisquare.com/) (you really gotta start at the beginning, though). I assume you know about Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/) by the Foglios, yes? Also good stuff, but you gotta start at the beginning to really appreciate it.

heh! That cracked me up. I want to go dancing too! I can't remember the last time I went.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay dancing!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
OOh, I wonder if Astral Sea still has that wonderful oil? How would I find out, short of going back out there (which, of course, we will, we also need to get one more $4 off gate tix coupon, yay!).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me what wonderful oil you're talking about, and I shall look for you!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll look up the name at home... I do believe it was just called "fire" and smelled like red ginger.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. That sounds delightful!

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Which vendor is this? I want to take a peak when I go because I love anything with good smells and can help with relief of the painful skin dryness that is winter.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Astral Sea is a little cart shoppe (no tent or anything) that's catty corner from the Used Pet Store, near the Barbarian's forest. Let me see if I can find the booth number on the KCRF map...OK, if it's not booth #541, it's really close to it.

Surprisingly, I've not utterly hated Freakangels. I think that it's steampunk I can tolerate, as the Victoriana doesn't get shoved down my throat.

The danger of the medium they're using is that the story's not going to be as gripping as it would be were it written for print. You've got less real estate upon which to plant your flag, basically. Thus, there's the risk of either having a lot of air in the story or a lot less story and a lot more bang-bang (the direction I went with Thunder Road.)

If I had the energy, I'd happily go dancing. As it stands, though, I'd be good to stay up long enough to leer from the sidelines. This is a shame, as my leering muscles have started to atrophy at an alarming rate.

Mark the date, mark the time.

LOVE.

I miss getting to bask in your humor, up close and personal-like. That fact, coupled with your atrophied leer muscles, is a recipe for tragedy.

What has the world come to?

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem, at base, is that I'm a broken down old man. If I don't get my weak tea, a blanket for my legs and a comfortable chair from which I can nod off while watching "Matlock," my evening's shot to shit.

Strikes me that I haven't been hugely social since well before the guys were born. That may need to be rectified.

I may actually have to brave the RenFest for a chance to make some time with my best girl-on-the-side. The sacrifices I make...

Edited to acknowledge the fact that I'm old. OLD!

Edited to acknowledge the fact that I'm old. OLD!

I'm older than you are, and I'm out there every weekend, belly dancing.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, I also don't have twins to care for...

Guh.

[identity profile] saffronhare.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Your "I want" statements made my brain go all kablooey. Hope your weekend delivers some joy.

Just your brain? I must be doing something wrong.

Oh, honey. I'm a control freak sitting at my desk at work. You're going just fine. :)

All sorts of parts of Me went Kablooey. I missed this post earlier, at least you were feeling better.

Cold, and I have a useless cloak, better get that out!

I will definitely be picking up the collection of Freakangels as I haven't managed to keep up with all of it online.

Me me!!

Are you taking applicants for that hands thing????
