When Fat Cat =/= Rich Cat

In the past six months, Fetish Kitty cost more in vet bills than she has her entire fifteen years prior to this. That doesn't include food, but her food bills are higher too, since she's on all-meat-all-the-time food now.

She racked up almost $1,000 in medical bills since January.

I love my cat. And she's going to keep me from attending the yoga training course. There is no way I can catch up at this point. All the money that was supposed to be going into savings for the yoga course is now earmarked for the LASIK surgery payment. If this continues, I'll have to pay for 100% the surgery out of my savings account, instead of half from current savings and the half I'd hoped to save since I scheduled it.

I was really banking (har har) on the fact that April is a three-paycheck month. The good news is that extra paycheck means I didn't have to put any of the vet payments on a credit card. Yay for silver linings.

To remind myself why I'm shelling out all this cash:

I haven't gotten there yet with my cats but the time will come. I love them more than most humans.

I love my cat more than I love most humans, too. But I have to say I'm not thrilled about how much love is costing me these days.

I would make the same decisions for my fuzzy little piranhas. *hugs*

Thank you.

And hey, let me know if/when you have another fabric sale event. I needs me extra income. =D

Darn kids anyhow...furry and otherwise! I might be touring, have a fairly low body fat percentage, and buying a house were it not for time and financial obligation to the little lives I'm nurturing in this world. As frustrating as those momentary realizations are.... I can't go to this workshop, can't make that class, can't travel to that performance...it's always trumped on those lazy night when you curl up with the smallish creature(s) who love so unconditionally. And knowing you are helping them to survive in this world where they spread so much warmth, love and complete goofiness.... it's worth a little poverty and the slight social death ;) You're a good mamma to your familiar love. And the photo is priceless!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Everything is a compromise, right?

[identity profile] satowi.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You get what you give :) The universe knew your little Fetish needed a very particular human to look after and you've done a magnificent job of it, from what I have gathered. I do believe, Ms Lydia...the gods are pleased ;)

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor little Fetish....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And getting littler every day. I think she's below nine pounds now. *sigh*

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)

I wonder if our pets get denied insurance for pre-existing conditions?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they can. Seriously. There is such a thing as pet insurance and it wouldn't surprise me if they declined to cover pre-existing conditions.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked it up once for Traci, but I can't remember anything about pre-existing conditions. Heck, might be worth looking into at this point.

Yep.. all do the same as people insurance. No coverage for pre-existing.
But you can cover pet health (and Lasik!) on Care Credit. (http://www.carecredit.com)
Huh.

No coverage for pre-existing.

Color me unsurprised.

Dr. Cavanaugh's office offers a 12-month interest-free payment plan. I'd hoped to have [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick put the whole surgery on his credit card and then pay him back when we got home. That way he'd get a whopping rewards check the following month.

Now, I'm not so sure about that. It makes me nervous to pull out nearly half my current savings for this. Using the in-house payment plan for at least half of it might be the better option for my own peace of mind.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)

Ahyup. Specially when it's interest-free, you can't go wrong.

Poor Fetish.
Poor you's.

I think I'm going to sign up for some policy before Ymirs starts getting age-related issues.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense - though of course you could pay part up-front, part over time, whatever makes you the most comfortable.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what I'm going to do.

"Using the in-house payment plan for at least half of it might be the better option for my own peace of mind."

Fetish is *so* loved. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Srsly. Cat doesn't know how lucky she is.

=/

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now she's curled up in her little box by the back door, watching birds and drowsing in the afternoon sun.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, rough life for her.

=b

I for one...

[identity profile] wyckedgood.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
believe the cost of healthy kitty is worth it but I am still sorry for the unexpected expenses.

Hugs

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor sick kitty. It's terrible how expensive vet services are, but it's good that Fetish kitty has such a good person to take care of her.

I've been in a similar place with my kitty Sophie, where getting her taken care of (even though we're still not really *sure* what's going on with her) costs everything I've got and means I can't do other things I'd planned on. But I wouldn't and couldn't not spend the money on her.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there! How is Sophie doing? Haven't heard much lately...

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to say. The last time I talked to the vet was around the end of November and she said then that they thought that Sophie had liver cancer and would probably decline quickly. So I was prepared for the worst and constantly watching for signs of pain or nausea or the kind of thing that would indicate her quality of life was no longer very good.

But since then Sophie's been pretty much fine. She's still very skinny, but she's eating and drinking and cuddling and purring. She gets excited about going outside in her harness to eat grass and explore the yard. She's even playing with some of the kitty toys!

So I guess she's probably sick but stable for now. If I had to guess, I'd say that the next time she takes a turn for the worse she might not be able to recover from it like she has twice before, but for now we're okay.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Very happy to hear Sophie is still enjoying life!

Fetish has stopped cuddling with me, but I'm not sure if that's because she still doesn't feel well or because she's pissed off at me from the continued daily antibiotic drops.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She does still come running to see you when you get home!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So I guess I'm not completely in the doghouse.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a good kitty mommy.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

[identity profile] grnvixen.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I never bothered to add up Maddelyn's vet bill during her kidney issues. She needed the care, we did it. I suppose if it had been something astronomical that would have required a second mortgage I would have thought twice but, they are family. Nuff said.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They are family, yes. But that doesn't mean I'm thrilled about aged kitty health trumping my own health.
