No. Just...no.

The timing on this is exquisite. Yesterday, just yesterday, I hopped on amazon.com to look for an out-of-print book. Yes, it would have broken my No-Amazon-Shopping rule, but it was just one book, you know? And I can't exactly order it from a local bookstore since the last hardcover publication date was 1960-something.

Then, today, I read this and I directed my attention to abebooks.com. Anyone else got suggestions on websites for OOP books?

In News of Awesome, though, check out the new 1 is 2 Many sexual assault awareness campaign that's being led by Joe Biden. Please note, there is not one mention of girls dressing safe, protecting themselves, or putting the blame for an assault on the victim. This one lays it all at the feet of the perpetrators. From the video:

No means no. No means no if she’s drunk or sober. No means no if she’s on the dorm room or the street. No means no even if she said yes first and changed her mind. No means no no matter what.

Thank you, Mr. VP.

In personal news, I need a day off. This weekend marks the halfway point of KCRF and I haven't taken any time off yet, like I usually do. The jury selection thing on Monday took a lot out of me. More than I thought it would. I'm worn out. It's still a ways away, but I'm thinking October 11 looks like a great day not to be in the office.

I've had good luck using http://www.bookfinder.com/ It was a life saver in grad school!

Another finder for OOP is Addall search (http://used.addall.com/) where you can leave out Amazon if you like :)

I love Joe "it's a big-fucking deal" Biden.

Gods, I hear you on needing a break.

If all else fails for biz books links, there's also half.com (http://www.half.ebay.com/), where you can also make a wishlist to get notified if someone puts it up for sale.
ETA: re Amazon, when we order from the warehouse here, it comes from Coffeyville KS, BUT the used books, unless it says otherwise, come from independent retailers, such as Hastings in TX (whom I've had super luck with) and independent amazon sellers. I watch mostly for them.

I'm liking him more since the election, which isn't something I can say about most elected officials. I'm still not certain about him as a politician, but I think he's an okay guy.

Thanks for the half.com tip!

You're welcome :)

I figured I'd look him up on Project Vote Smart (http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=53279), since you mentioned it.
I still like Bill Clinton, but I'm not happy about his and Hilary's ties to Monsanto.

Thank you for posting the Biden link. It made me cry, but in the "I am crying because I do not really know how to cope with someone espousing the novel notion that rape and abuse aren't women's fault somehow," way.

Much love,
Rowan

I know, right? What a world. *sigh*

When I say THIS POST IS FULL OF EVIL AND GOOD, it isn't usually the politician getting the good half.

I like abebooks. I've had success there.

I watched the entire Biden video. Joe Biden rocks! (I am one of those "1 in 5".) One of the things he says, is that we are all responsible for stepping up. But I also understand why people don't step up. Perpetrators are SCARY.

ah! Looks like you're doing something with the Ren Fair. Do you do the whole shebang? Do we get pix of you?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you're a one-in-five. =(

I've been working KCRF off and on, in some capacity, since 1994 (eeeeeeek). I've bounced around a bit with what I do, but the past two years I've just performed (I'm a bellydancer) solely at the Royal Cigar Society Smoker. It's the daily bawdy show with raunchy jokes and booze. Best show out there, IMO.

I don't have many pics of me performing from this year, but yesterday's LJ post had a pic of me from opening weekend (this year), and my Flickr account has a bellydance section (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chernobylred/sets/72157607796191342/), about half of which were taken at KCRF, or in made-for-KCRF dance costumes.

If you want to check out more recent stuff, I'm doing another 365 portrait project (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chernobylred/sets/72157625845549807/), and the past three weekends have photos of me in make-up for the show, but you don't really get to see the costumes.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got a GREAT look!! I also love the costumes and the make up...I guess the make up is is part of the costume, really.

As for being a one-in-five...well, lots of us are, so at least we got a lot of company! Also, it was a loooooong time ago and I don't have a lot of emotion around it anymore. I guess I healed.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks!

Too bad you're not local--I'd send a couple comp passes your way.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am taking Monday off, I'm "sick" with the VP's permission. I'm also not working that Tuesday at the legion as my manager there offered to take a shift if I was getting too tired. Yes thank you I am. Ah, rest day!

I saw that about Amazon. ICK.

I saw that about Biden <3!

Good for you, taking some you days!

Also, is that a new icon of you? Adorable!

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! :D me day!

Thank you, I like it too. Sweet Dennis has posted some really good pics on FB. It might be a public page.

I KNOW! :D

I'm stunned you did not know about Abe's. It is almost the only place I go for oop books. I like the way they do their listings.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. I did know about Abe's. That's why I went there after reading the article about Amazon.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A step in the right direction, but I wish that they would go one step further to fight sexual assault not just against women, but men, too. It happens far more often than most people seem to realize, and because the way society views it, men are far more afraid to speak up against it than women, even.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-21 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand, and I've read some blogs that are complaining about that. But it was, I think, a definite choice by this action group to focus on the assaults to women in this particular age group because the numbers of assaults against them have been rising.

Powell's has gotten two out of print books for me.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-22 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! I used Abebooks for this one, but next time I'll definitely check Powell's first.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-09-22 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooh! I didn't realize Powell's worked with used stuff. Good to know! Thanks.
