Complicit

Two nights in a row of not enough sleep. Not cool. Lovely times with friends, though. I'm enjoying it (and the wine) while I can.

I put this up on my Tumblr, but I'm posting it here, too:

I wish my moderate Republican friends would simply be honest.
They all say they’re voting for Romney because of his economic
policies (tenuous and ill-formed as they are), and that they
disagree with him on gay rights. Fine. Then look me in the eye,
speak with a level clear voice, and say, “My taxes and take-home
pay mean more than your fundamental civil rights, the sanctity
of your marriage, your right to visit an ailing spouse in the
hospital, your dignity as a citizen of this country, your
healthcare, your right to inherit, the mental welfare and emotional
well-being of your youth, and your very personhood.” It’s like
voting for George Wallace during the Civil Rights movements, and
apologizing for his racism. You’re still complicit. You’re still
perpetuating anti-gay legislation and cultural homophobia. You
don’t get to walk away clean, because you say you “disagree” with
your candidate on these issues.

Tonight is the second dance class with [livejournal.com profile] msmitti. I should probably try to get in a nap or things might go worse than last week. In fact, I think I could fall asleep right now.

I know that you will be starting this in January but I was wondering how long you are planning on giving this trial.

I've done so many elimination diets over the years for various lengths of time and reasons; some were definitely more difficult than others. I have learned more from some than others, although the most important food-related information I have gained has been through observation over time. Of course, it only took one small slice of a delicious nut torte for me to learn that I am very allergic to pistachios. Last time, I felt (and looked) like I was about to spontaneously combust (red, hot, itching like hell, and panting for breath), so I will not be trying that particular food again! On the other hand, it took me far too long to realize which ingredient in my favorite pizza was giving me heartburn.

I have just embarked on another, but this time it is more for the sake of healing these ulcerations than learning. I figure a month or more of low acid, low spice, no alcohol, and no oral use of SLS is well worth it. I do hope to learn how to avoid this problem in the future as well.

For the past two months, I have been keeping track of every-little-thing that affects my body: amount and quality of sleep, menstrual cycle day, weight, digestion, food and bev, physical and mental activities, and any changes in how I feel emotionally and physically. Just by being able to check on the last time I felt a certain way, I have learned a bit already. I am hoping that, after six months of this, I will have enough information to formulate some hypotheses about what goes so terribly awry in my body and create some experiments to see if they are correct.

I was wondering if you have done/are doing/will do something similar, since you take a "my body, my science experiment" kind of approach as well.

This isn't really an elimination diet. It's a "stop eating things that cause an immune response until your body calms the fuck down" diet. I'm hoping three months will be long enough to get my autoimmune issues under control, which will also help with the cortisol/adrenal issues, which will help with everything.

Oh, so it is more of a healing diet. I must have missed a post at some point. I hope that this and the other self caretaking measures you've discussed get you back on the road to health or somewhere very, very close.

Yep. More of a healing thing than a what-else-is-wrong. Which is on one hand easier (I'm not testing anything), but on the other hand is harder (I don't expect to learn anything).

Thanks, I hope so, too!

BTW, I love this quote and will be nabbing it to post on FB.

That's a great quote.

Eesh...I hope you fall back into a normal sleep pattern.

It took me a while to fall asleep last night, but once I did, I stayed asleep until 6:30! Yay!

I was hanging out at Java Break on Friday and I overheard a young woman in the booth behind me say to her companion, "Yeah, I'm voting for Romney. I mostly agree with the Democrats on social issues, but I'll lose more money under Obama. Gay marriage is OK, but my money is more important." Then she added, "I'm not really an educated voter."

I don't think I'd say this to many people in person, but Dear Woman [livejournal.com profile] cartoon_goblin Overheard at Java Break:

DIE IN A FIRE

YES, THIS.

She may not give a good goddamn about other people's rights and liberties, but what about her own as, you know, a woman? Aargh!

(Also, I find it highly, HIGHLY unlikely that she will actually lose more money under Obama. You would really have to be earning a big chunk o' change in order for that to be true. Good grief!)

Exactly!

And yeah, I highly doubt anyone hanging out in a college town coffee shop is making enough money for it to make a difference if Romney is president.

If she is one of the entitled upper class, and that's highly possible in a college town-- they aren't all poor little working students-- then I feel even more hateful toward her.
