This post brought to you by the letter I

Two nights of decent sleep seems to be my max for now. Went to bed last night at 10-ish. Up at 2:30 this morning. Bummer.

I started to get a migraine yesterday, but managed to fend it off (for the most part) with acupressure and tapping. I can still feel it swirling around back there, though. Ergh. At least today we'll be spared yesterday's weirdo weather (swift weather changes = major migraine trigger for me).

WTF was with those weather shifts? Oh, right. Kansas.

This is a good article on how to spot a misogynist. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] solan_t!

And this is a good article on how to be a progressive person who still likes problematic things.

After a disastrous attempt to put snaps on Watson's coat pockets, I avoided the sewing room for the rest of the evening. It's a good thing I had an extra foot or so of fabric left. I completely destroyed that poor pocket flap. Yikes. I might have to go to Hancock's for more snaps before I finish.

Wow, I'd love to be able to fall back asleep. Maybe if I just curl up on the couch, here...

you don't get to decide for other people what 'grade' of racism it is on some sort of fictitious scale of racism.

This. This this this this. [livejournal.com profile] dotar_sojat, you're doing the exact thing that the author of "How to Like Problematic Things" cautions against. You're telling us that we shouldn't be bothered by something. You're discounting and discrediting our feelings. You're speaking from a place of privilege, and telling us that we shouldn't be bothered by something because "it's only a low grade of it."

Um. No.

Nobody's telling you that you should be bothered by it. Nobody's telling you that you shouldn't like the books. All we're telling you is that we find this to be a problem with the books/author. Telling us (even jokingly) that "feh," our opinions are wrong and invalid? Kind of not cool. Maybe go back and re-read the "How to Like Problematic Things" article. And then consider re-reading the misogyny article, paying particular attention to the section on "if you want to see REAL oppression, look at..." It's harmful to qualify and quantify oppression. Saying "it's only a little bit racist" is a nasty slippery slope.

Hey, little lady, what do you know of racism and sexism? If you want to see real oppression, go to Saudi Arabia. Anyway, how can women expect us to respect their LotR knowledge when they can't possibly understand what it was like to be Mr. Tolkien? I'm sure your problem can be boiled down to the fact that men and women have different biology; men are more rational about stuff like LotR, while women get all emotional - maybe it's your time of the month. Anyway, REAL feminists would understand that men like Tolkien have as hard a row to hoe as any woman out there! It's just reverse sexism.

;-)
