Maternal instinct

My mother and nana (her mother) just left this morning after spending a long weekend with me. We had a wonderful time, full of tea, crossword puzzles, good food, and...rubberstamping.

Rubberstamping is a new hobby that Mommy and Nana have picked up and they packed up all their supplies and brought them for the trip. We spent an afternoon and an evening (two separate days) making cute little cards. I have to say it was a lot of fun. Hobby Lobby had stamps for half price and I picked up some gorgeous asian ones for them. A geisha, a Chinese landscape, and a little set of four with the Japanese characters for sky, star, sun, and moon. Good wholesome fun was had by all.

We also went to see X2 (more good wholesome fun with a bit of violence thrown in!).

I have a wonderful mommy and nana. Nana gave Mommy a great love of reading, especially fantasy and science fiction, and Mommy passed that on to me. We can sit together for hours, each involved in our own book, with occasional breaks for tea refills. We consider that good quality time together. They also passed to me a dry sense of humor, a taste for good chocolate and good cheese, and a belief that everyone is entitled to their own opinion (wrong or stupid as it may be), as long as it doesn't harm anyone else, including good Mother Earth.

I think it's odd that with such wonderful role models, I grew up with absolutely no desire to try motherhood myself. I think it boils down to just plain selfishness. I want to keep my time my own and I'm not happy when someone demands time of me that I don't want to give up.
