[personal profile] minoanmiss recently posted about slurs in the arts and it reminded me that last summer I finally won my fight against Theatre Lawrence (I'm really sorry y'all can't hear the scorn in my voice when I pronounce that) regarding their use of the G slur on their website. Did I already talk about this? Sorry if I'm repeating myself. But here's the email I sent to Mary (fucking) Doveton, the Executive Director:

Mary,
A few years ago I wrote to you, asking Theater Lawrence to please remove the racial slur of "g*psy" from your website and promotional materials. I pointed out that even Broadway had ceased using the term in 2018 (https://www.playbill.com/article/actors-equitys-gypsy-robe-will-get-a-new-name). Theatre Lawrence declined to remove the name from your history section, citing "tradition" and use of the term in a famous musical.

Since even the science community has come around to removing this term from usage, I thought perhaps Theatre Lawrence might consider it time to do so as well.

Many organizations are waking up to other racist terms used in their industry and are taking steps to change (Makrut leaves, for example: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/anti-black-racism-product-waitrose-b1867121.html).

I hope Theatre Lawrence will finally recognize its use of a racial slur is not appropriate or acceptable and take immediate steps to change and do better by marginalized communities.

And miracle of miracles, here's what she wrote back the very next day:

The website has been modified.

Obviously she wasn't thrilled (yes, that was the entirety of her email), but Any Win A Victory, right?

So yeah, that was nice and I'm trying to focus on nice things and how my existence matters.
