December meme: 5 Fictional Characters

mumblemumble, five fictional characters I love.
I'm not using any c-drama characters, both to make it more difficult for me and also more engaging for the folks reading who aren't in c-ent fandom.
Spock (Star Trek, TOS)
I see so much of myself in him. I too prefer to approach things logically and methodically, I'm uncomfortable with strong emotions, and I have great eyebrows. The way he tries so hard to find a place in a world that wants to put him in a box, classify him as one thing when he contains multitudes. His insistence on sticking to his values even when he's teased or misunderstood because of them. The way he can disguise his most distinguishing feature with some simple distraction (in his case, a hat) and as long as nobody gets too close (or the wind doesn't blow too hard) they're fooled. The way he blossoms when people treat him and his boundaries with respect (or when he's high lol).
Chihiro (Sprited Away)
So brave! So determined! So smart! I appreciate how she definitely learns and grows through the movie, but core self remains solid. She's not frightened of moving to a new place, she's angry at her lack of agency. Her hesitancy to follow her parents through the door and her refusal to eat the food aren't rooted in fear, but a healthy wariness and self-preservation. She wants the opportunity to consider a situation before acting, and that insistence on being thoughtful serves her well. Because she's observant and kind she finds a way to thrive in the bath house and eventually save her parents.
David Rose (Schitt's Creek)
I mean, if nothing else, his sartorial choices are glorious. I would wear 90% of his wardrobe. I appreciate his messy, wonderful mix of confidence and insecurity. I like how he owns who he is, even if (when) he doesn't always like certain aspects of himself. When he loves, he loves so completely and so much. I realize a lot of his dialogue is scripted so it's ridiculous to envy his ability for snappy comebacks and catty, off-the-cuff observations but I still do. Oh to be that quick on my feet. And he also has fantastic eyebrows.
Jason Mendoza (The Good Place)
I just love himbos. What else is there to say. He's perfect in every way.
Widow Thayer (Big Eden)
I see lot of myself in Widow Thayer, too, although I hope I'm a better cook. I identify with her desire to connect with people and then connect those people with other people. I also tend to talk a little too much when I have a captive audience. It's a problem, but at least I'm conscious of it and take active measures to engage in conversation instead of just talking at people. She has no room in her heart or her life for prejudice. The only time someone is really wrong is when they refuse the opportunity for love and community.
If you'd like to ask me for five somethings (I'm terrible at favorites, but I'll give you five and you can pick your favorite 😂), please leave a comment on this post!
