Closing the weekend on a sad note

This afternoon I called several of the accepted applicants who have not confirmed their enrollment status for Fall 2006. One of the calls was answered by a woman who, when I asked for the student, paused and informed me that he would not be enrolling at KU because he (her son) passed away this summer.

In the background, I could hear the crying of his just-months-old baby boy.

Heartbreak.
